A well known place since 1916, when Jamal Pasha, who was known as the butcher, executed a Lebanese national and a Syrian in the arena after the Ottoman Empire lost the first world war accusing them of helping the enemies. When the French entered Beirut, they erected an arch to commemorate the martyrs.

General Guru ordered the place to be called "Martyrs Square". Then they built a monument by the sculptor Yousef al-Hawayek of the Lebanese rock representing a Muslim woman and another Christian who were buried on a grave. But was destroyed during independence, for what the Lebanese considered a symbol of submission and humiliation.
In 1932 Abboud Abdel Razzaq built the Opera Cinema which replaced the old bourse in Beirut and became a cultural landmark in the arena.
Create the monument
In 1950, Riad Solh ordered the demolition of the Serail to expand the square and establish modern commercial areas. In 1952, at the end of the reign of President Bashar al-Khouri, the government allocated an international prize for the design of a new design for the martyrs. The design of the architect Sami Abd al-Baqi was chosen. It is an arch 27 meters high and 24 meters wide, with an 8-meter-high arch topped by a mastsaba. However, the events of 1958 prevented the completion of work.
After the events of 1958, the city council of Beirut commissioned the Italian sculptor Marino Mazakurati to sculpt a new monument to the martyrs. The work ended 30 months after the production of a statue symbolizing freedom represented by a woman who raises a torch in her hand and surrounds her other young man and on the ground in front of her and behind it are desirable to be officially inaugurated in 1960 under the auspices of President Fouad Chehab.
