يُحكي أن جماعة من العميان أرادوا أن يتعرفوا على شكل الفيل، ولم تكن لديهم أية فكرة سابقة عنه، وكانت وسيلتهم الوحيدة للتعرف عليه - بطبيعة الحال - هي اللمس، فلما أُحضر الفيل إليهم، وقعت يد أحدهم على رجليه، ووقعت يد آخر على نابه، بينما وقعت يد الأخير على أذنه، فلما سألهم أحد العميان الذي لم تتح له فرصة اللمس، فكانت أجوبتهم مختلفة، فقال الذي لمس الرِجل: إن الفيل ما هو إلا مثل أسطوانة خشنة الظاهر إلا أنه ألين منها. وقال الذي لمس الناب: ليس كما يقول، بل هو صلب لا لين فيه، وأملس لا خشونة فيه، وليس في غلظ الأسطوانة أصلًا، بل هو مثل عمود. فاعترض الذي لمس الأذن قائلًا: ما قيل ليس صحيحًا، فما هو بعمود ولا هو مثل أسطوانة، وإنما هو مثل جلد عريض غليظ.
مشكلة هؤلاء العميان لم تكن في صدق أحدهم أو كذب الآخر، ولكن مشكلتهم أنهم نسوا أنهم عميان، وأن وسيلتهم فى المعرفة هي اللمس، وأنه من الجائز جدًا أن يكون كل منهم لمس جزءًا من الفيل، ولم تتح له الفرصة كي يتعرف على بقية أجزائه. فلو كلّف أحدهم نفسه أن يفكر قليلًا لاستوعب حقيقة الأمر، ولجمع الرؤى المتعددة وكون بها صورة كاملة عن الفيل، لكنه الغرور الذي يُخيِّل لصاحبه أنه يملك الحقيقة المطلقة، والعمى الذي يعمي العقول قبل أن يعمي الأبصار. فهؤلاء العميان هم نحن، وسائلنا فى المعرفة محدودة، ولكن غطرستنا لا حدود لها، المس ما شئت من فيل المعرفة وحقائق الأمور، لكنك فى النهاية لن تحصل سوى على جزء من الصورة، وبقية الصورة لدى الآخرين، احترم الآخر تكتمل رؤيتك، تغطرس بما لديك فلن تعرف ولن يكون نصيبك سوى وهم معرفة لا أكثر!
It is said that a group of blind people wanted to know the shape of the elephant, and they had no previous idea of it, and their only way to know it - of course - is touch, when the elephant brought them, one of them fell on his legs, The last hand on his ear, when asked by one of the blind who did not have the opportunity to touch, and their answers were different, he said, who touched the man: The elephant is only like a drum rough appearance, but it is from them. And he said, Who touched the canine: It is not as he says, but it is solid, not soft in it, and smoothness, not roughness in it, and not in the thickening of the cylinder at all; it is like a pillar. He objected to the ear, saying: What is said is not true, what is a pillar or is like a cylinder, but it is like a thick broad skin.
The problem of these blind people was not in the truth of one or the other, but their problem is that they forgot that they are blind, that their method of knowledge is touch, and that it is very possible that each of them touched part of the elephant, and did not have the opportunity to recognize the rest of its parts. If one of them himself has to think a bit to understand the truth of the matter, to combine multiple visions and to have a complete picture of the elephant, but vanity, which tells the owner that he has the absolute truth, and blindness, which blind minds before blind eyes. These blind people are us, our means of knowledge are limited, but our guts are limitless, touch whatever you want from the elephant of knowledge and the facts of things, but in the end you will only get a part of the picture, the rest of the picture in others, respect the other, complete your vision, You know and your share will be nothing but a knowing illusion!
