Rahma Khaled: First Television Host in Egypt with Down Syndrome

Celebrating the International Day of Persons with Special Needs, on December 3, Al Ghad TV invited the swimming champion Rahma Khaled (22) to co-host a Live segment on their morning show New Day. Rahma who has Down Syndrome is a graduate from the Faculty of Tourism and Hotels and dreams to become a television host.

بمناسبة الاحتفال باليوم العالمي لذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة والموافق ٣ ديسمبر، دعت قناة الغد بطلة السباحة رحمة خالد (٢٢عاما) للعمل كمذيعة في برنامج "يوم جديد"، حيث شاركت في تقديم فقرة علي الهواء مباشرة. ورحمة المصابة بمتلازمة داون تخرجت من كلية السياحة والفنادق وتحلم بالعمل كمذيعة.

وقبل ظهورها علي الشاشة أجرت "بروفات" لمدة ٤٥ دقيقة، تضمنت التعامل مع الكاميرات داخل الأستديو..
ظهرت رحمة أمام الكاميرات لتقديم فقرة البرنامج بثقة واحترافية، وأعربت عن سعادتها للعمل كمذيعة ولو لعدة دقائق. ورغم شعورها بالقلق، الا ان عبارات التشجيع من فريق عمل البرنامج طمأنتها، وتحدثت عن ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة، ونالت فقرتها اشادة من العاملين بالقناة والمشاهدين مما أزاد من ثقتها بنفسها.

Before going on air, Rahma rehearsed for 45 minutes. She also got acquainted with the cameras in the studio. The rehearsals paid off as she appeared confident and professional in front of the camera. She expressed her happiness to host a show, even for few minutes. In spite of her anxiety before the show started, the support of the show producers encouraged her. She addressed the issue of people with special needs. Her segment was highly praised by the TV crew and viewers, which boosted her confidence.

وقد تلقت رحمة دورات تدريبية متخصصة في التقديم الإذاعي والعمل الإعلامي، خلال الأشهر الماضية، لتعويض عدم تخصصها، كونها درست الثانوي الفندقي، وتخرجها في معهد "الألسن" للسياحة والفنادق قسم دراسات سياحية، العام الجاري.
In the last few months, Rahma has attended several training courses in radio broadcast and media work, as her degree in Hotels and Tourism is not enough to qualify her to pursue her dream to work in the media.

رحمة تقدم أيضا منذ عامين، فقرة شهريًة في البرنامج الإذاعي "أطفال اليوم" على راديو "صوت العرب"، موضحة، أنها تحارب للعمل في الإعلام، لأنه أسرع وسيلة لتحسين صورة ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة، والتأكيد بمثال عملي من خلالها على قدرتهم على العمل في المهن المختلفة.

Over the past two years, Rahma has been presenting a monthly radio show for children on Sot Al Arab Radio Station. She explains that she is fighting hard to work in the media as it is the quickest and most effective way to improve the image of people with special needs. Her work in different professions would be a practical example of their abilities, she said.

رحمة أيضا بطلة سباحة، حصلت علي المركز الأول في بطولة السباحة للأولمبياد لسنة ٢٠١٠، ٢٠١١، وأيضا بطولة الجمهورية عام ٢٠١٠ وحضرت مؤتمر الشباب الأول المقام في لبنان على هامش البطولة الإقليمية العاشرة في 9/2012 كمتحدث رسمي لذويا لقدرات الخاصة.

حصلت رحمة على بطولة كأس مصر للأتحاد المصري واللي أهلها لبطولة العالم في إيطاليا السنة حصلت رحمه على لقب المرأة الأكثر تأثيراً لعام ٢٠١٥ لتكون الفتاة الأصغر سناً في قائمة النساء المصريات.

Rahma is also a swimming champion. She won first place at the Special Olympics in 2010 and 2011, and the national championship in 2010.

She attended a youth conference in 2012 in Beirut as a spokesperson for young people with special needs.

Rahma was also qualified for the world championship in Italy in 2015 after she won the Egyptian cup.

With all her accomplishments, she was voted the most influential woman in 2015, the youngest to receive the title among Egyptian women.
