العائلة هي اللبنة الأساسيّة في بناء المجتمعات، والأساس الذي تقوم عليه تربية الأبناء والبنات، فهي رمزُ الاستقرار والأمان، والحضن الذي يضم جميع أفراد الأسرة، والكيان الذي أسسه الأم والأب، ليكونا رأس الهرم فيه، مما يُضفي على العائلة جواً من الشعور بالحب والحنان المبني على الفطرة. تُعتبر العائلة مدرسةً للتربية والأخلاق، وصلاحها يعني صلاح الأجيال وتقدمها وازدهارها، وفسادها يعني فساد المجتمع بأكمله، لذلك تحظى العائلة بمفهومها الواسع بكل الاهتمام والرعاية، وجاء تأكيد أهميتها في جميع الشرائع السماويّة، وخصوصاً الإسلام، الذي جعل رباط العائلة مقدساً، مبنياً على العدل بين أفرادها، وقائماً على الحب والتفاهم وتوزيع الأدوار كما ينبغي، ولا يجوز المساس بأي مبدأ من المبادئ الأساسيّة التي تقوم عليه العائلة أبداً، كي يظلّ المجتمع قوياً ومتماسكاً، يربي أفراداً أسوياء وصالحين.
