La partie occidentale de l'île de Mljet est classée Parc national Croate. En se promenant dans le parc, au cœur d’une forêt méditerranéenne luxuriante et d’une faune sauvage l'on comprend aisément pourquoi l’île de Mljet est surnommée l'île verte.

Cette île est un véritable havre de paix où la nature est reine. Forêts, plages, villages pittoresques, lacs font le bonheur des promeneurs. Le petit et le grand lac sont 2 véritables merveilles que l'on ne s'attend pas à trouver au milieu de cette forêt quasi ininterrompue.

Mljet est également associée à de nombreuses légendes. Certains racontent que l'île était le lieu de villégiature d’Ulysse, alors que d'autres prétendent qu'il s'agirait de l'île d'Ogygia sur laquelle la nymphe Calypso aurait gardé Odyssée pendant sept ans.
