News story:(Technology) Apple To Create Their Own CPUs for Macs

in #apple7 years ago

Making CPUs aren't easy, but of course unless you're making x86 CPUs needing Intel's license then no worries; you're good to go. Apple has decided to fly on their own path to use their patented CPUs on Mac products instead of Intel's. Initiative is codenamed Kalamata(in Bangla is what you call a black-head) and has also been stated to serve as the processors for future installments of iPhones and iPads.

To no surprise, this will affect Intel's stock rate at negative outcome. Annual revenue from Apple's partnership results around 5% of overall earnings for Intel. Intel became Apple's partner after Steve Jobs announced at stage of WDC in 2005 that they're switching from IBM's PowerPC.

Though there hasn't been full confirmations as all is in Theory. Apple is to end Intel's partnership by the year 2020 once the products have been ready for mass production. The move is also being made to merge ecosystems  from both phones and computers as quoted from Shannon Cross, analyst from Cross research: " We think that Apple is looking at ways to further integrate their hardware and software platforms, and they’ve clearly made some moves in this space, trying to integrate iOS and macOS, it makes sense that they’re going in this direction. If you look at incremental R&D spend, it’s gone into ways to try to vertically integrate their components so they can add more functionality for competitive differentiation. "

There was once an incident where Apple has shut off a semiconductor partner from their products; they've switched from Nvidia's GPUs for their Mac Pro and Macbook systems in favor of AMD Radeon instead. That move was made out of spite because Nvidia threatened legal action over Apple regarding the Kepler licensing scheme.

If this comes to fruition, after 16 years it'll end the relationship these two giants had.
