Apple Bring 5nm to iPhone 12

in #apple4 years ago

It is finally that time of year where Apple reveal their next iteration of the iPhone. I’ve not been a massive fan of the iPhone revisions over the past few years. Things have felt a little stale and I’ve generally been content with using older iPhones. It’s been missing some excitement, but the latest Apple conference event has unveiled details of the iPhone 12 and it contained some pretty substantial claims. As expected, these phones are pushing 5G and will come in various choices ranging from the regular iPhone 12, Pro, Pro Max and something not seen before, iPhone 12 mini. The mini is a smaller version of the 12 but carries the same specs, a choice for users to make but I am not sure of battery difference between the two just yet.

The introduction of the in-house developed A14 chip is substantial in iPhone development. This 5nm chip is supposedly around 50% more powerful than any other current chip on 7nm architecture and brings in massive efficiency too. Apple highlighted that they were able to reduce the overall size of the iPhone to achieve a slim body while packing in more at the same time. I still hope that this will not cause a bendy phone issue but it’s encouraging to see apple champion something they have developed and this may carry over to mac computing in the near future.

Power and efficiency along with significant GPU capabilities, it was no surprise that Apple would attempt to demo something gaming related. When it was mentioned that a massive title would be coming to Apple’s platform, I momentarily thought of Fortnite but then remembered the sour relationship between epic and Apple. Instead, they revealed League of Legends mobile, I had some flashbacks to Blizzard’s Diablo moment but perhaps iPhone users will enjoy playing league on their phones. Although, league games are pretty long and I am sure I’d much prefer to stick to my PC.

Personally, I am looking forward to testing the AI powered functions that mostly rely on neural networks to provide cutting edge features. Photography being one of the main points of focus here as the intelligence behind image processing is supposed to be nothing short of amazing. They demoed a video piece filmed and edited exclusively by the iPhone but its early days still. Battery is proposed to last longer due to the component development and design. One thing I will note is the absence of a higher screen refresh rate, this is supposedly due to 5G choices but perhaps there are also battery considerations around this too.
