Siri for MS-DOS? An exhilarating video [Eng] [Ita]

Those under the age of 30 will hardly remember MS-DOS. It was an operating system launched by Microsoft and dedicated to x86 personal computers. A real must-have in the 80s, which millions of users have interfaced with. Today there are Windows 10, macOS, Linux - not to mention smartphone-based OS like iOS and Android - with minimal and super-simplified controls. And then, there are the voice assistants: with Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant, Cortana and Bixby, the user only needs to dialogue with the female voice to see (almost) every order fulfilled. How would MS-DOS have been, with an integrated voice assistant?

We really needed a hero to fill such a gap. Someone capable of imagining Siri applied to the now-obsolete MS-DOS system. Said and done: let's not forget about the extraordinary resources of the internet, a powerful tool of communication "that gave to idiots the right to speak" (cited Umberto Eco). And so, a few days ago the Youtube channel Squirrel Monkey has released a video of the series Wonders of the World Wide Web. It’s called "Siri in the '80" and is very funny. Perhaps a gag "for a few" that will delight a limited slice of navigators (nerds, over 40 and Applemaniacs). Laughter, for them at least, is assured.

The video is structured as a presentation of the Siri service, recorded on a VHS. The female voice tries to interact with Siri for IBM, with results, to say the least, embarrassing. Floppy Disk installation, eternal loading times and a series of really exceptional eithtees references. Ah, forget the persuasive voice of Susan Bennett: instead of her there’s a lamentation that seems to come out of a metaphonic recording. Disturbing.

Chi ha meno di 30 anni difficilmente si ricorderà di MS-DOS. Era un sistema operativo lanciato da Microsoft, dedicato ai personal computer x86. Un vero must negli anni ’80, con il quale si sono interfacciati milioni di utenti. Oggi c’è iOS, Windows 10 e Android, con comandi minimali e super-semplificati. E poi ci sono gli assistenti vocali: con Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant, Cortana e Bixby all’utente basta dialogare con la voce femminile per veder esaudito ogni suo ordine. Ma come sarebbe stato MS-DOS se avesse avuto un assistente vocale integrato?

Ci voleva proprio un eroe che colmasse una simile lacuna. Qualcuno che immaginasse Siri applicato al sistema obsoleto di MS-DOS. Detto, fatto: non dimentichiamoci delle straordinarie risorse di internet, potente mezzo di comunicazione “che ha dato diritto di parola agli imbecilli” (cit. Umberto Eco). Così da pochi giorni sul canale Youtube Squirrel Monkey è uscito il video della serie Wonders of the World Wide Web. Si intitola “Siri in the ‘80” ed è spassosissimo. Forse una gag "per pochi" e che diletterà una fetta circoscritta di navigatori (nerd, over 40 e Applemaniaci). Le risate per tutti loro sono assicurate.

Il video è strutturato come una presentazione del servizio Siri, registrato su un VHS. La voce femminile prova a interagire con il Siri per IBM, con risultati a dir poco imbarazzanti. Installazione da Floppy Disk, tempi di caricamento eterni e una serie di riferimenti eithtees davvero eccezionali. Ah, scordatevi la voce suadente di Susan Bennett: al suo posto c’è un lamento che sembra uscito da una registrazione metafonica. Inquietante.
