It looks really slick and is intended to be similar to Instagram... so it's really intended to be a mobile app front end to Steem. There was a demo at Steemfest, and clearly a lot of money and development effort has gone into it... definitely aimed at encouraging mass adoption...

Yes as @aussieninja says it is targeting people used to an experience like Instagram. It will also run on a SMT (ie a level above the base steem token but using the steem blockchain once it goes from beta after SMT's are launched around March next year). Steempeak is great however it is more of a long form blogging platform (at the moment), they will complement each other. I wrote a bit of a review of APPICS here https://steempeak.com/appics/@intrepidphotos/appics-app-testing

So when you use an SMT will your post still appear on dapps which use the steem blockchain directly?... in the same way that posting to @dtube will show up on @steempeak or steemit.com

No so once the SMT's launch the posts to the DApps that use them will not be first level posts to the blockchain so they will not show up on top level viewers like Steemit/Steempeak (in the same way that Custom Json data written to the blockchain that Steem Monsters and others use does not show up in them now). It will essentially be a different platform with a different token (XAP). But all activity will be recorded on the steem blockchain and APPICS will have to hold STEEM tokens to obtain the resource credits (RC) to make all the transactions to the blockchain required for their social media platform to function and onboard users. So that is why SMT's create demand for STEEM even if they reward their users in their own token.

And we will need to hold their SMT to use their resources? Not Steem?

I imagine that will be up to them and is yet to be determined. They will choose the rules of engagement for the SMT. It is likely they will have some requirement for holding of the token to stop spam but will delegate that to new accounts that are verified with a phone number or attached to a unique phone ID or something similar. SMTs are still under development so there is some uncertainty as to how it will all work. You can see the whitepaper here https://smt.steem.com/

Cheers Rob. Thanks for taking the time

No problem. Hope your photo prize workshop is going well. Will have to enter your comp one year ;-)

The idea is that the user of the program will not need to know that it is based on steem unless they want to. Steem becomes simply an outsourced blockchain to record the activity so that the Dapps don't have to run their own blockchain nodes and worry about up-time and security etc but still get the advantage of their own token to do an ICO. They purchase the rights to interaction bandwith on the blockchain by buying and holding steem .
