What makes Trump's political career so confusing is that there is a nontrivial amount of people who want to give the establishment the middle finger.

Democrat establishment, Republican establishment, state establishment, religious establishment, they do not care. They want to give it all the middle finger and Trump is the way for them to do it. They are not a majority of the country but combined with a Republican core that will vote Republican no matter what they were enough to win in 2016 and are in a good position to give Turmp the presidency this year.

That explains why they are difficult to poll; I suspect they just do not answer pollsters. This is why events like what happened in MSG, which I have not seen but have secondhand knowledge, will not matter nor will any convictions Trump has. Indeed those events even make Trump more of a hero in their eyes as it shows how the establishment is trying to take out their hero.

The attempts to stigmatize Trump may well have had the opposite effect as it concerns his unspoken for supporters. I am not saying they have illegitimate grievances. Some of their complaints are legit. But they have a willingness to burn the system down and Trump is their vehicle for that. So that I do not get what I know is coming, I am not saying this is true for all Trump supporters. But enough of them that they can turn an election.

Perhaps after the dusk has settled on Trump's political career, whether it is in a week or in four years, as a society we can think about how to bring into the fold so many disaffected individuals. If we don't then they will be a long-term problem for us.
