Cihiro is a ten-year-old girl who moved to another city with her parents. She was not very happy with the move and only considered how the plan affected her, complaining about everything including her new school until the bouquet of flowers she had given to her friends as a gift.
While searching for a route closer to their new home, Chihiro's father drove to a small lane that ended up in a mysterious building. Chihiro's parents are curious and enter through the dark gate of the building. On the other hand, they discover what they assume to be an abandoned playground, which later reveals that the place is actually a frontier between the world of spirits and the human world.
When walking down the river bank, Smelling the food and following the scent past the grassy valley into a small village full of restaurants. Although the restaurant seemed empty, the table was full of food. Chihiro's parents ate the food, but Chihiro did not go in because he was afraid the food owner would get angry and arrest them. When they offered food, he refused and ran away. The food will become the root of the problem that makes Chihiro's parents turn into pigs. Chihiro then saw a bridge leading to a large public bathhouse. Before arriving, a boy named Haku, approached him and commemorated him to leave before sunset. At that moment, the sky began to darken and the lights in the baths were lit. Haku tells Chihiro to cross the river as fast as possible while he will divert other attention.
Chihiro ran back to the restaurant where his parents ate and found that they had turned into a pig. He was very frightened and tried to get back to his car. He was stopped in the middle of the road because he saw past the pastures had been submerged under the water.
Chihiro gets more confused when he becomes transparent. Haku finds him and feeds him from the spirit world, so he no longer disappears. He helps Chihiro to sneak into a public bath, owned by a magician named Yubaba. Haku tells Chihiro that the only way he can survive in the world of spirits is by working in public baths to save his parents.
Chihiro followed Haku's advice and headed to the heating room and asked Kamaji, a water heater worker for a job. He dismisses Chihiro until one of his employees falls in coal. Chihiro takes the coal and puts it in a water heater. Although the coal is very heavy, he can finish his job. kamaji is very satisfied and decides to help Chihiro find a job by asking a girl named Rin (Lin) to bring Chihiro to Yubaba.
Chihiro finds Yubaba who looks regal but horrible. Chihiro asked for permission to work, heeding Yubaba's repeated rejection. yubaba then accepts, in condition Chihiro gives his name to Yubaba. The wizard takes control of Chihiro's name, puts a signature on the contract and only puts one of Chihiro's character names on the contract paper. The kanji character with one of the strokes is removed as read "Sen." Now known as Sen, Chihiro is assigned to be Lin's assistant.
The next morning, Haku showed Sen that her parents were in the cage with the other pigs. Haku gave Sen his old clothes and a card from a goodbye and flower gifts. Sen reads the card and remembers his name, once they forget his name, just as Haku forgot his own name, it will be owned by Yubaba.
Sen has difficulty adjusting to his new life but winning respect by helping troublesome customers, a terrible and creepy "ghost spirit". Sen helps cleanse the ghosts and finds out that he is a strong and richly polluted river spirits. Sen succeeds in the task with the help of a mysterious spirit that resembles a haunting spirit called No Face (Kaonashi), who is attracted to him for his kindness in the past.
