Top 5 Anime opening sequences of the 90's
The 1990's is when I discovered and fell in love with anime. From the slick art style to the much more mature content, it has left a lasting impression on me. Welcome to Anime month at Retro Room! Why August? Um, well because its the only month that starts with A, as in Anime. I could have done January for "Japanimation", but nobody has called it that since 1997. So for the month of August, I'll be making periodic posts about anime -- discussions, top 5 lists and more.
Today be kicking off "ANIME MONTH" by presenting my top 5 favorite anime opening sequences from the 90's. Its the anime that I first discovered and the series that I have the most nostalgia towards, so enough of the intro. Let's take a look at my list.
#5 Slayers Next
This could have just as well been any of the other Slayers intros, but I think this is the best. Animation is a step up from season one and the song is addictive and energetic.
#4 Tenchi Muyo
One of the first complete series that I was able to watch, Tenchi Muyo's is one of my early favorites. The theme is far more mellow that most openings of the era and mirrors how much traditional Japanese culture is a part of Tenchi Muyo.
I could not find a video of the opening, but the first episode is on YouTube straight from Funimation, which includes the intro (it just can't be embedded outside of YouTube).
#3 Neon Genesis Evangelion
While I completely love both Evangelion and this opening sequence, its a total bait-and-switch. The upbeat dance-style opening theme does not match the dark, heavy and philosophical themes the show pushes. Regardless, its full of amazing visuals and the song is totally addictive.
#2 Trigun
While the animation is more minimal with Trigun, the distinctive and badass guitar-driven theme song complements the style of the show perfectly, while hiding the fact that Vash the Stampede is actually a complete goofball rather than the murder machine the name "The Human Typhoon" carries with it.
#1 Cowboy Bebop
Of course it was going to be Cowboy Bebop. First of all, its my favorite anime series of all time and secondly, both the visuals and music are on point. The amazing visuals that look like they poured straight of the brain of Saul Bass paired with an amazingly cool jazz theme song make for one of the most unique anime opening sequences of all time, if not flat out the greatest.
