TOKYO GHOUL

What is a ghoul? What is a Tokyo Ghoul?

According to our trusty old Wikipedia, a ghoul is a monster or evil spirit in Arabic mythology, associated with graveyards and consuming flesh. They’re the kinds of monsters you’ll see in the movies or somethings who look like zombies in the night. Try thinking of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video, you’d get the picture or just look at the pic below.

In terms of being a Tokyo Ghoul, these kinds of ghouls are the types that would only exist in anime. Sticking to the original concept of being a ghoul, these creatures also eat human flesh. The only difference between these two is that Tokyo Ghouls are camouflaged within the society. They look, act and live (or try to live) like ordinary humans. But in the shadows, they prey on unsuspecting victims to satisfy their hunger or just play around and kill people cause sometimes that’s just how things go in a world plagued with these kinds of creatures. Unlike prehistoric ghoul concepts, these types of ghouls must consume human flesh to maintain their sanity and they cannot consume normal human food cause they are wired to only eat human. If they force themselves to eat human food, there is a possibility that they’d get sick.

A month without the consumption of human flesh would cause them to lose control of their extraordinary predatory organs called Kagunes. These organs are somewhat like special mutations only found in ghouls in this story. Though I’d like to tackle more about the special predatory organs present in ghouls and how they are also related to normal non-ghoul people in this story that would make this a long thing to read. I suggest reading the manga, cause it’s pretty informative and the way they created a whole biological explanation with the origins of these organs is pretty fascinating.

Knowing this, we can instantly say that this is gonna be a bloody ride with lots of carnage, gore and all that bloody goodness. Anyone who’s interested in this stuff will definitely enjoy watching or reading Tokyo Ghoul (please read the manga, it’s 10000000000x better than the anime adaptation) and also read Tokyo Ghoul:RE too, it’s super good.

The Protagonist

images-137.jpg

Tokyo Ghoul revolves around the main protagonist, Kaneki Ken. He is a human who is a big bookworm and has the qualities of a socially awkward kid you’d like to bully around (LOL). He has the generic life of a common anime protagonist we all have known (and loved), like

1. Living alone

2. Being orphaned

3. No other relatives (but if you read the manga, you’d know that he has a pretty effed up aunt)

4. Has one person he/she is close to

5. Being too anxious to function normally

That’s pretty much it, or do you have anything else to add?

The Story

It all started with a little crush. Fancying a girl who likes reading books too, Kaneki chats with his best friend, Hide in a coffee shop named Anteiku. Heads up first, Anteiku is actually a coffee shop run by a staff of GHOULS. After gathering the courage to strike a conversation with the girl, Rize, about the author of the books they are currently reading Kaneki scored a date. But things go from great to worse.

Unknowingly being trapped into the vicious hands of a binge eating ghoul, Kaneki is attacked by his date. She was actually a pretty strong ghoul lurking around looking for prey, and he was that prey. Though Kaneki escapes a brutal death thanks to the falling debris in the construction site where the attack happened killing Rize, he is thrown into an even worse predicament.

Waking up in a hospital and knowing that he had an organ transplant, Kaneki soon realizes during recovery that the organ transplanted to his body was that of a ghoul. Slowly turning into a half ghoul, Kaneki faces the struggles of coping with his unusual hunger for human flesh. Knowing in his mind that killing a fellow human and eating them would greatly go against his conscience. Struggling through survival and keeping in mind that he is a human first, Kaneki is torn between being a human and surviving as a ghoul. His humanity is put to a test. Is it better for him to survive as a ghoul who is scorned and killed by society or is it better for the people in this cruel world to live instead of him.

The many faces of humanity are put into the spotlight. Is justice present for ghouls who are trying to live a normal life like a human or is justice only for those who think that humans are the only creatures that deserve to live?

The RAVE

Tokyo Ghoul has a decent following of fans all throughout the globe. The depth of the story really engages you and makes you think of your own humanity. You are torn between the sides of the ghouls and the humans. Us being humans, we have a biased opinion. But listening to the side of the ghouls, you’ll realize that they just picked the short stick and are forced to struggle through their conscience of killing day by day.

Though Tokyo Ghoul is a bit dark, it has its own way of giving some life lessons. Life truly is twisted and those who hold the upper hand always get the better things in life. It’s sad and also refreshing to find an anime that dives deep into the human soul and exposing its dark sides. The characters (my favorite is Suzuya Juuzou) and character developments are remarkably well thought of, it’s like you are getting to know the life and internal struggles of a real person. The art style of the manga is genuinely amazing (Ishida Sui-sensei is a god). I definitely recommend adding this anime/manga into your watch/reading list.

Amazing review @rakerumon! I had fun reading your post :) Your presentation of the story is very detailed but not to the point that it becomes a spoiler. You have an in-depth way of understanding the concept of the story. I have also read/watched a handful of mangga/anime movies and most of those do have life lessons that in some way has impact on our way of understanding towards life. Also, thank you for pointing out some parts that were'nt included in the anime, i think i do need to read the mangga version. 😂 See you on your next rave! 👍👍

Thank you for reading. Any suggestions for my next rave?

How about Shingeki No Kyojin or SAO or Death Note? Hahaha I actually like these. I'm looking forward to read your raves! Gambatte @rakerumon!!

Nice one! Season 3 takes sooo long to come out though.. I feel I have to rewatch it to remember what is going on before starting the new season when/if it comes out.

I suggest you just read the manga. It's much better to read coz honestly, the anime changed a lot of vital stuff. The manga is much more informative.

I've heard that too, might give it a peek if I happen to have time these days. :)

Very impressive @rakerumon, I love how you make a review about animes, keep up the good work 🤗

Congratulations papart u did well..

This is a great review, nicely written! Probably should include the Wikipedia link, since you mentioned it in the text (quite clearly - thank you). Overall, this is an excellent post.

Thank you for pointing that out. I'm still new at this stuff so I may forget important things sometimes like credits. I'll do my best to not forget next time.

You're doing great. It's an awesome post!
