Top 3 Most Tragic Love Stories - Anime Edition [MMG]

in #anime6 years ago

It's Valentine's day, and we've made a list of 3 anime love stories you'll never forget!

The list was comprised of anime selected by MMG's co-founders. This list is specifically our opinion, but we think it's pretty darn good! This list is in no particular order (too hard to chose one). Also, in order to give you a full explanation of the story we've taken large chunks of the write up from the wiki pages. We have edited the wiki page write up and added plenty of our own flare. The ideas is not to steal their write up, but to give you a full story for this list.

Feel free to comment with other anime you feel would be worthy of this list. Last, sorry, but Krillin and Android 18 didn't make the list despite her being absorbed by Cell. Let's give them the runner-up and move on.

Warning - THIS IS PRETTY MUCH ALL SPOILERS!!!

1. Berserk - Guts & Casca

Here we have one heck of a love triangle. Casca (キャスカ Kyasuka) was the only female soldier in the original Band of the Hawk and is behind only Griffith (leader of Band of the Hawk) and Guts (protagonist) in swordsmanship. Her ambivalent relationship to both of them makes her moody and capricious. Casca joins the Band of the Hawk after Griffith empowers her to save herself from a sexual assault by a nobleman. Casca harbors feelings towards Griffith which almost every member of the group knows about.

Casca is initially against Guts joining the band of the Hawk and is hostile towards him, which is amplified by Griffith asking her to sleep next to an injured and unconscious Guts (for body heat). Eventually, she accepts him as a comrade, after he saves her life multiple times, even beginning to fall in love with him, though she does not realize it at first. It's really a cute relationship to watch unfold in what is otherwise a very action packed and dark anime.

When Guts is preparing to leave the Band of The Hawk, Casca tries to stop him, going so far as to ask if he is leaving because of her (thinking that perhaps Guts hates her, when he actually cares for her) and begs him to stay. After Griffith is imprisoned for sleeping with the Princess, Casca becomes the leader of the Band of the Hawk as they are forced to go into hiding due to the constant assaults from the Army of Midland.

After Guts returns to aid them when they are under attack, Casca attempts to blame Guts for Griffith's capture, but admits she knows it isn't his fault, and laments her perceived failures as a leader before attempting suicide by facing a horde of enemy soldiers on her own. Guts saves her yet again, and the two consummate their mutual feelings (right on the forest floor) for one another, embarking on a rescue mission to recover Griffith the following day. The rescue of Griffith is successful, but his broken spirit (due to being beaten and tortured for a few years) leads to his choice to sacrifice the Band of the Hawk during the Eclipse, and Casca is forced to watch her comrades being slaughtered by demons conjured from another realm, before she is violated by Griffith after his rebirth as Femto, seemingly losing her memories and becoming mute as a result of the trauma
.

In addition to being branded with a sacrificial mark on her breast and thus becoming a target for fell creatures on a nightly basis, Casca prematurely gives birth to her child with Guts after it has been corrupted from Griffith's rape.

Casca was entrusted into Godo's care before she wandered off to St. Albion and was saved by Guts, who attempts to protect her on his own despite the more dangerous spirits that their brands together attract. Guts's attempt ultimately had him lose Casca's trust when he attacked her while under the influence of his inner darkness. As Casca travels, completely oblivious to her surroundings, Guts and company keep a close watch over her. She has put herself in grave danger many times but Guts' group has yet to fail to come to her rescue and protect her. She seems to slowly be warming up to Guts again even coming to his side when he is unconscious to watch him.!
Casca's well being is the driving force for Guts to keep himself from reverting to a revenge-obsessed wanderer. While outside Vritanis, the Skull Knight revealed that her mental state may be cured by the Elvish queen Hanafuku while cryptically warning Guts that "What [Casca] wishes for may not be what [Guts] wishes for". Once Casca is brought to Elfhelm, Hanafuku begins the restoration ritual by having Farnese and Schierke enter the world within her mind.

2. Code Geass - Leluch & Shirley

Shirley Fenette (シャーリー・フェネット Shārī Fenetto) is a friendly girl and is a member of the swimming club. She has a habit of giving people pet names, such as calling Lelouch "Lulu".
When she was a freshman, she disliked Lelouch, but after witnessing him, who was with Rivalz, discreetly humiliate a road-raged driver that was abusing an elderly couple without taking any credit, she became curious about him and eventually fell madly in love with him.

Consequently, she jealously believes that he and Kallen are romantically linked (due to awkward exchanges between them), and is constantly teased about it by Milly, unaware she is merely jealous of the fact she can choose who she loves.

After the Black Knights, led by Lelouch's alter ego Zero, indirectly cause the death of her father, the distressed Shirley discovers that Lelouch is Zero, and shoots Villetta Nu to protect his secret. She tries to write a letter about her feelings on the situation to Lelouch, only to throw it aside. Mao then uses his mind-reading Geass to manipulate her into killing Lelouch for him, but she cannot bring herself to do so. To alleviate her suffering, Lelouch uses his Geass to erase Shirley's memories of him. Shirley rediscovers her letter near the end of the first season, but cannot confront Lelouch about it because of the rebellion that takes place.

In the second season, Shirley's memories, along with the rest of Ashford's Student Council, have been rewritten by the Emperor, while her affection for Lelouch has returned as an apparent consequence. Her memories are inadvertently restored by Jeremiah Gottwald's Geass Canceler. Despite this and traumatic illusions of masks that come as a result, she decides to forgive Lelouch and tries yet fails to get Suzaku to do the same.

Shirley then tries to ally with Rolo, but he uses his Geass and fatally shoots her in the stomach with a gun she is holding when she shows knowledge of Nunnally's existence, and she eventually dies after professing love to a devastated Lelouch. Her death is justified by Rolo as being because she wanted to kill Lelouch in her trauma, yet is ruled a suicide publicly.

3. Inuyasha - Inuyasha and Kikyo

Inuyasha met and fell in love with the priestess Kikyo, who was tasked with protecting the Shikon no Tama (Sacred Jewel), a powerful jewel that could grant a wish, a jewel that Inuyasha believed could making him a full demon(born half demon). Through interacting with Kikyo, who was also living a lonely and isolated life as a wondering priestess, Inuyasha relinquished his dream of being a full demon and instead he and Kikyo planned for him to use the Shikon Jewel to become a human so that he could live with her. However, Naraku manipulated them into believing they had been betrayed by one another.

Before Kikyo died, she shot Inuyasha with a sealing arrow that bound him to the Sacred Tree(believing her lover had betrayed her). Inuyasha remained there for 50 years, until Kagome Higurashi pulled out the arrow, breaking the seal.

When the Shikon Jewel, which had previously been embedded in Kagome's body, is shattered into fragments that scatter across feudal Japan, Inuyasha and Kagome travel together to retrieve the shards with Inuyasha once again seeking it to turn into a full-fledged demon. While Inuyasha initially sees Kagome as merely a tool with which to retrieve the shards of the jewel, Inuyasha and Kagome(who looks just like Kikyo, and even uses a bow and arrow...like Kikyo) grow closer over time and he begins to fall in love with her.

Others such as the fox demon Shippo and the rambunctious monk Miroku as well as Sango the demon slayer, later join the duo in their quest. Inuyasha eventually discovers that the events surrounding Kikyo's death were a result of Naraku tricking him and Kikyo, forcing them to turn against each other. Inuyasha's quest changes over time from looking for the Shikon Jewel shards to trying to defeat Naraku in the end after three years of Naraku's defeat, He reunited with Kagome after Bone-Eater's well was connected and married her.

Closing Remarks

Phew, what a list. These anime definetly pulled on my heart strings a bit more than I'd generally consider to be acceptable...but in a good way. If you've never watched one of these anime, I suggest that you give it a shot and find yourself thoroughly entertained.
