Daily Anime Pick #16 - Monogatari
Today's pick in the Daily Anime Pick-Series where I pick one anime each day that I think is worth watching is Monogatari!
Yesterdays Daily Anime Pick got a lot of unexpected attention so for today I'll be covering something special and that is the famous Monogatari-Series. And yes you've heard right: It's a whole series! When you encounter this one you'll probably be a bit confused as for how you are going to watch this series since there are so many parts. But first let's have a quick look at what Monogatari is all about.
Monogatari started out in 2009 with Bakemonogatari which starts a bit into the story. The story itself follows Araragi Koyomi - a third-year high school student at that time - who was turned into a vampire and now has to deal with side effects. That's were Bakemonogatari beginns.
For the whole story Araragi Koyomi encounters a lot of things called oddities, apparitions or sometimes aberrations. A vampire would be one of those and that of course includes Koyomi himself.
In terms of how the story is delivered one can say that Monogatari is quite unique. Most of the time you'll listen to people talking and see brief animations in between. The art can be described as abstract and tries to underline the overall impact of the story instead of depicting reality. You'll also see a lot of SHAFT's famous head tilts in this series.
DO NOT try this at home!
So far we know that Koyomi needs to deal with a lot of apparitions but is this all this series has to offer?
When someone asks such a question you'll already know the answer so I'll just skip it. The story is not only segregated into many many parts but the watch order is also not the chronological order but that enhances the overall presentation. You can clearly tell when you've watched a few parts that the story was already set when those parts were made. Not only you'll see how after each part everything starts to come together a bit more but if you pay close attention to what is said in between the lines you'll get a lot more out of it. Frankly said the conversations that take place are similarly abstract as the art style or quite philosophically if you want to call it that. So I recommend watching this series only if you can pay attention to what is said. That way it will have more of an impact.
And just as a side note: Generally I am very impressed by Japanese voice acting in animes but this series clearly shines brighter in terms of it. Every voice fits its characters perfectly and that even though there are some very strange characters in this series.
And now it's probably a good time to talk about the different characters.
You already know our protagonist Araragi Koyomi but now you'll also get to see how he looks.
Quite cool if you ask me.
He's one of those who will do everything in their power (and beyond) to save someone.
The one from above who was so kind to show us her head tilt is Hitagi Senjougahara.
Personally I really like every single character. All of them are so unique no matter what they do in the anime they all have something that's likeable. Now I won't be listing all the characters since that would clearly stretch this article too much but I'm sure you'll have fun discovering them on your own!
So I am going to make a headline so that people can easily and quickly use this as a reference.
The is the release order and since they did release it in this order for a reason you should be watching the anime in this order the first time.

Now what follows is the usual format of the Daily Anime Pick-Series but since I've already listed all the story parts I'll skip the franchise section. Be aware that there are Specials besides the main story line. The description will cover the first part Bakemonogatari.
And as a little disclaimer: There are quite brutal scenes in this series so be warned.
Description
Koyomi Araragi, a third-year high school student, manages to survive a vampire attack with the help of Meme Oshino, a strange man residing in an abandoned building. Though being saved from vampirism and now a human again, several side effects such as superhuman healing abilities and enhanced vision still remain. Regardless, Araragi tries to live the life of a normal student, with the help of his friend and the class president, Tsubasa Hanekawa.
When fellow classmate Hitagi Senjougahara falls down the stairs and is caught by Araragi, the boy realizes that the girl is unnaturally weightless. Despite Senjougahara's protests, Araragi insists he help her, deciding to enlist the aid of Oshino, the very man who had once helped him with his own predicament.
Through several tales involving demons and gods, Bakemonogatari follows Araragi as he attempts to help those who suffer from supernatural maladies.

Hands down one of the worst shows I have seen. The weird French directing is meant to be a distraction from the horribly written dialogue and weak characterisation, but the directing isn't even good so it can't distract very well. The characters are all horrible people. The protagonist is an unashamed pedophile who cheats of his girlfriend frequently.
It's a bad harem which looks artsy and different to try and hide how degenerate it is. Avoid this show.
Since you also didn't like Angel Beats I am now very curious about the animes you consider to be best. Could you please list your favorite ones?
Barakamon, Serial Experiments Lain, Ping Pong the Animation, Legend of the Galactic Heroes and a couple others.
I see, thanks! It seems like our tastes are far apart! But it would be boring otherwise.
