The word anime is the Japanese term for animation, which means all forms of animated media. Outside of Japan, anime specifically refers to animation from Japan or as an animation style propagated by Japan that is often characterized by colorful graphics, lively characters, and fantastic themes. An abstract cultural approach to the meaning of the word can open up the possibility of anime produced in countries other than Japan. For simplicity, many Westerners are strictly seeing anime as a Japanese animation product. Some scholars suggest defining anime as specifically or essentially Japan may be associated with a new form of Orientalism.

The earliest commercial Japanese animation began in 1917, and Japanese anime production has since steadily increased steadily. The typical anime art style emerged in the 1960s with the works of Osamu Tezuka and spread internationally at the end of the 20th century, developing a large domestic and international audience. Anime is distributed theatrically, via live television, directly to home media, and over the Internet. These are classified into many genres that target a wide range of viewers and niches.

Anime is a diverse art form with different production methods and techniques that have been adapted over time in response to emerging technologies. It consists of an ideal storytelling mechanism, combining graphic art, characterization, cinematography, and other forms of imaginative and individualistic techniques. Less anime production focuses on motion animation and more on the realism of setting as well as the use of camera effects, including panning, zooming, and angular images. Being hand-drawn, the anime is separated from reality by a crucial fission gap that provides an ideal path for escape that the audience can easily enjoy. A wide variety of art styles are used and the proportions of characters and features can vary greatly, including large eyes that are emotive or realistic in size.

The anime industry comprises more than 430 production studios, including big names like Studio Ghibli, Gainax, and Toei Animation. Although only composed of a small part of Japan's domestic film market, the anime is the majority of Japanese DVD sales. It has also seen international success after the advent of the British-nicknamed programming. The rise in international popularity has resulted in non-Japanese production using an anime art style. Whether these works are anime-influenced animations or the right anime is the subject to debate among fans.
