Devilman Crybaby, a new take on an 80's classic Initial Thoughts

in #anime7 years ago

In the news of this season in anime, Devilman Crybaby was released a mere six days ago on Netflix in the United States and has already destroyed the internet. People have been raving about it since release as the last animated entry in the series turned out to be devilishly horrid, and now we can have a more faithful adaptation to the original manga written by Go Nagai.

For those who are unfamiliar with the series, the story follows two teens Ryo and Akira. Ryo, a blonde kid who has no sense of remorse and will do anything to achieve his goals utilizes his friend Akira, a pure-hearted individual who wishes only to live a normal high school life but will do anything to help out his friend. Ryo after finding out about demons existing within the real world decides that he wishes to experiment on them. Ryo is seeking out the answers to demons, namely if it was possible to control a demonic possession to harness their powers to create a superior human form, as normally demons take over their hosts for feeding and act as parasites to their human counterpart. Ryo decides that he is going to use Akira as his test subject for this, but any further on this subject and I think I'd spoil the first episode so I think I will leave this synopsis where it stands.

Ryo as seen in the first episode

Devilman Crybaby is animated by Science SARU a Japanese animation company, which is surprising given the very Korean-esque animation style that the story is given. It has extremely vivid and bright colors while utilizing extremely organic shapes and character designs making it easier to animate extreme poses and motion without having to worry about various minor details that can be picked up on in a more realistic look. Science SARU was also responsible for animating shows such as Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome,Yoake Tsugeru Lu no Uta, and even Adventure Time.

Devilman as seen in the 1987 OVA

For right now, I have only watched the first episode of the new anime as well as the 1987 OVA Devilman: The Birth, as I would like to post my thoughts for each episode as I go along with the show on Steemit. For the sake of keeping the first episode's thought separate from this post I will only briefly state that I like the direction that the show is going in right now. It really keeps the horror and feeling of despair at times that the original manga had while keeping it looking new and fresh. The art style is a little hard to overcome initially, but I can tell that this show is doing a great job at keeping me hooked in with the dynamic action scenes as well as the surrealism shown in the initial sequence. I'm really looking forward to finishing this series so please no spoilers in the comments!
