Seasonal OPness
So Isekai Cheat Magician just came out today, and Katsute Kami Datta Kemono tachi e came out yesterday. So this is the perfect opportunity to talk about both! Both feature extremely powerful protagonists. Let's start with Kemono Tachi.
What happens when supersoldiers have no war to fight and lose all sense of morality? Who cares so long as it's entertaining! Katsute Kami Datta Kemono tachi e chronicles the life of the leader of a supersoldier squad months after its disbanding. He plans on upholding a promise he made to kill anyone who lost control of their powers. I was questioning this show all the way through the first episode and halfway through the second. I was completely tuned out as the characters discussed their families (to boost the tragedy), motivations, and backstories. I came here and saw this as a military show. You can't just pose yourself like that and end the war in the first episode. If you want me to relate to soldiers, show me the struggles they go through fighting. Unfortunately, the show does not do this. It resorts to cheap tricks to create emotional tension, which I feel only degrades its quality. If you want to do backstories, do it a bit slower, please, and take advantage of your premise.
I don't just have complaints about this show, however. I was anticipating in the middle of this episode for this girl's eyes to shrink to 30% like they would in most other shows where a character is shocked by trauma. The fact that this never happened gave me hope that not everything in this show will be melodrama. The entire conceit of her involvement in the plot is what will keep me interested in the next episode. As an overpowered character, the MC, Hank would realistically overshadow any plain character like her, be it friend or foe. Her incorporation has to be done carefully to not make it seem pointless, otherwise the show will get much worse. The entire idea of hunting down former supersoldiers has nothing to do with whether this will be good or not; it all hinges on how the plot changes from here on. And me, I'm optimistic.
Next up is Isekai Cheat Magician. To be honest, this is much more your typical OP self-insert power trip. The first episode serves absolutely no purpose at all. Obviously, we knew this was going to be an isekai, and we knew our protagonists were going to be overpowered magicians. That much comes from the title, but they still decided that that was the only plot they should include in episode 1. The only thing this episode even allows me to judge is its production quality. This comes courtesy of Encourage Films, which is well known for absolutely nothing. The composer did No Game no Life Zero, and the OP was done by Myth & Roid. I enjoy both of these very much, but that's all I can say to its merits.
I tried judging this show as best I could so my criticisms would be fair. First of all, this protagonist might as well be called diagonal Kirito. His design is as bland as crap and he's always shown in these off-kilter shots. Once the action starts, you would be lucky to get a plain tilted shot as they start using this weird camera shaking effect. This guy also comes with an 幼馴染, but so far, she hasn't contributed anything. I don't think this deserves to be watched. Save your time for the other great shows coming out this season.
