With so many people covering so many shows they think you should watch, it can be troubling when you don't agree with them. When those alternative opinions gain traction, debates start on many topics from Undertale to Re:Zero. In such a community, it can be easy to lose sight of what you likely came here for in the first place: fun. If what you are watching is not fun to you, there is little reason to watch it. You may be like Digibro and thrive in part on negativity, but those people are the exception.

When something like Your Name comes out and everyone is rushing to the movies to watch it, ask yourself if you really care. You may agree with them and that's great! Go watch it. But if you don't think you will like it or if you already know you dislike it, feel free to skip out on it. There's no reason to force yourself to waste two hours staring at a screen hoping something better will happen when you know it won't. For me, I enjoyed Your Name, but I don't appreciate it as much as other people, and certainly do not want to rewatch it. Arkada may say that the how and why questions do not matter to the film, but I cannot accept that so long as I survive on answers.

Just how you are under no obligation to appreciate anime other people like, you are also free to enjoy whatever anime appeals to you. There is no shame in liking Sword Art Online if its action scenes appeal to you and its writing is bearable. No one should say that such a show should never be watched because there is always an audience, no matter how small. The only point at which there is no value in a product is when you can produce it (or a better version) yourself for cheaper. This is the basis for abridged series, allowing people to explore what they like about a series without having to worry about trying to have mass appeal. Most shows fall beyond this point and there will be some people who believe it has worth. To me, Shin Sekai Yori embodies this. To me, it is boring and the strange philosophical plot goes nowhere. However, there will be people who are satisfied with just exploring the idea behind the world.

Basically, go be you, and enjoy what you will. No one knows what you like other than you, so go have fun and don't listen to them.

Sort:

I only watch anime I want and that often leads me to never watching some popular anime of the season. I also encourage everyone to do the same. It's a bit like Hollywood movies. I'm okay with superhero films, but I know some who actively avoid them, which can be hard because a large chunk of the industry is just about superheroes nowadays. But no one should just buy into the superhero genre just because they happen to be a fan of "movies".
