Let's explore what makes good live action adaptations

in #anime8 years ago

I saw this clip on YouTube some time ago and I was screaming near the end. When people do trailer reactions I'm never impressed...... at all. But I was seriously reacting to this one. I'm a crazy fan of GitS but I equally love Evangelion. At first I was thinking the possibility of an incomplete production as I was seeing $100 million USD budget live action movie production for Evangelion being in development hell. Please take a look.

That was great, wasn't it? I was also suspecting a CG adaptation like Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Gantz 0, Aplleseed movies, Vexille etc. That would have been also epic and the production quality of the "Trailer" matched that. I actually saw Space Pirate Captain Harlock later and while I was searching about the director as I was really impressed with the movie. I was loving what I saw on http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0032925/ and then I saw Evangelion: Another Impact - Confidential

The so called trailer was actually a short clip. I'm glad they did it. But I'm sad they didn't do more. Anime and video games have a poor adaptation history. Don't even get me started on Death Note and Ghost in the Shell character assassinations. Hollywood has a habit of destroying everything awesome about a character in the name of their agendas. Then I found this gem.

Rurouni Kenshin Movie Trilogy

I'm really glad the the first one tripled its budget in the box office and we got to see the rest of the story. I hadn't seen the anime. After watching the movies, I felt like I don't need to. Just so you know, the main role is actually played by a model in the live action.

I'm not saying that we should let the Japanese handle all the adaptations. It's just we need the right people with the right mindset doing those adaptations. Look at Pacific Rim. It looks like a shounen manga to me. Also Live Die Repeat (Edge of Tomorrow) is based on a manga named All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Nobody is talking about these. Anime adaptations can be western with western actors and directors and still be awesome. We need quality; not geographical/cltural differences.

Reading this post made me come across the fact that Oldboy (2003) is also based on an anime. I consider anime to be the greatest medium of entertainment on Earth. Anime can inspire all other mediums while treading on difficult unusual topics. Here is a great video essay on that:

Oats Studios

I've gotten to like CG anime movies more than live actions. CG can accomplish a great deal of things including making everything look a lot like in the anime. Since you are building everything from scratch, why not build something unique.

At Oats Studios, the creation of Volume 1 required immense resources. Our wish is to receive funding sourced directly from our audience, as we establish a studio fueled by pure creativity and passion. We have many, many more worlds to create and stories to tell, but we need help from people around the globe. Our goal is to create Volumes 2, 3 and more and eventually, full scale-scale features. If you feel positive about what you’ve seen and want more, please support us by purchasing our additional content as it becomes available.

More than anything I'd like these guys to handle some anime adaptations. They have produced some excellent stuff. They show a real passion and there is the director of District 9 behind the project. I'm not too sure about their business model. But I'm certainly sure about their talent.

Passion and understanding is very important when it comes to an adaptation. Anime tends to explore deep complex topics. Anime can have more explosions than summer blockbusters and Nothing on Earth can really outdo anime when it comes to mindless epic entertainment. I mean take a look at Gurren Lagann or Gintama. Anime is crazy and that's why we love it. We need directors, writers and producers who embrace that craziness and keep the complexity high.

These are just random thoughts of mine as a fan of the medium. I hope I'm adding something nice to the #anime community on the STEEM blockchain. I'm always looking forward to something great. I see many of you guys are making reviews. That's why I thought of doing something different that explore many different aspect of live action anime. The best works I've seen come from

  • Talented people taking liberties
  • Passionate people recreating things in great detail
  • CG with higher budgets
I'm going to say that these things are what make good anime adaptations.

Great article, I really enjoy some live actions althought some felt short due to crappy special effects. The most part I am more worried about the story being precise. Which is what most Live actions come thru or not. I liked Attack on titans live action as well as parasite. They were true to the story.

AoT had some terible effects and too much grey (to save on budget). Parasyte was mostly decent. But I still prefered the anime. Even though it was not anime, Shin Godzilla co-directed by Anno was pretty damn good. I loved it.

Glad to meet a new anime fan! Folliowing you :)

Great larryphang could you show me some love on my project (STEEM MUSIC NIGERIA)... Your posts are amazing, iv been following your blog.

Some years ago I watched a Greek classical theater. It had a little to do with modern evolved in depth and broadness theater however; the theater form interacting with viewers has got basically the same limitations. Feature films using computer based scenes possess a deeper influence and affect on people’s minds. In your video we can see how the girl is impressed by the anime. She is totally in the anime reality and needs a help. Thanks for the wonderful compilation.
