First impression: Spring Anime 2018

in #anime8 years ago

The spring anime season kicked off to a good start with famous titles like Boku no Hero Academia S3, Tokyo Ghoul: Re, Shokugeki no Soma S3 and Highschool DxD Hero leading the pack. There are also those that have built quite the hype before the season even started such as Persona 5, Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online and the much awaited Steins; Gate 0.

Among the numerous titles that are airing this season I've picked some that I think may be worth checking out if you have time to spare (I used may be, because I've only seen an episode or two so I can't guarantee if it will hold up till the end) and I will not include in my list the titles I've just mentioned earlier because I think they no longer need publicity since they are already well known in the industry. So without further ado, I hereby present the rundown anime series with first episodes that left an impression (for me in the least) at the start of Spring 2018 anime season.

1. Megalo Box

This show is like a blast from the past as it uses an old school style of animation which is pretty rare nowadays because of the influx of moe animation in the industry. The boxing meets technology concept is also a nice touch that gives the show a sense of originality since there are already some boxing centered anime out there. Then there is the protagonist, JD (Junk Dog) a man who has no other choice but to participates in underground megalo boxing matches to earn a living despite him possessing talent that may enable him to fight as a professional.
If you're looking for a breath of fresh air from all the cutesy anime shows, I highly recommend this one.

Genres: Action, Slice of Life, Sports, Drama, Shounen

2. Tada-kun wa Koi wo Shinai (Tada Never Falls in Love)

A romcom series following the life of Mitsuyoshi Tada. One day he had an encounter with a foreigner named Teresa Wagner while taking photographs of sakura blossoms.
I don't have much to say about the story since this is pretty much the standard set up in anime shows like this but what impressed me is it's delivery of what it is offering, and that is romance and comedy. The romance part at this point is still premature but during their first time meeting you can already feel the sweetness that is about to unfold in the later parts of the story. And as for the comedy, the main character's friend Kaoru Ijuuin has it covered (his voice alone is enough to make me laugh).

Genres: Comedy, Romance

3. Golden Kamuy

The show received a lot of roasts in its pilot episode because of the way the bears are animated, yeah the bears doesn't fit well with the rest of the animation but it is not a good enough reason to shy away from this one. If you can look past the bears' animation you have a badass show, where the protagonist is trying to locate a large amount of gold to fulfill the promise he made to his deceased best friend. But in order to find it, he will first need to hunt 24 jail-breakers because the map to the gold is tattooed on their bodies.
This is a survival story set in the Meiji Period and they are up against not only the jail-breakers but also against all those who seek the fortune for themselves.

Genres: Action, Adventure, Historical, Seinen

4. Uma Musume: Pretty Derby

I will clear this out first, they are horse girls not centaurs. They look like your regular school girls save for their horse tails, ears and their tremendous speed.
There has been a growing trend of monster girls in the industry (Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou, Demi-chan wa Kataritai, Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon, etc.) which fans jokingly referred to as being hit by the Japanizing beam.
Though the series is not a phenomenal one, it is still a good watch because it packs a kick with it's good blend of drama, comedy, rivalries, intense races and fluid animation.

Genre: Sports

5. 3D Kanojo: Real Girl

I am not a fan of pure romance series, but every once in a while I find myself enjoying some. This season I stumbled upon this one and I am reminded of Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your Lie in April) and that is a good sign since I thoroughly enjoyed Shigatsu.
The show is about Tsutsui Hikari, an Otaku who avoids socializing with others but his life started to change when Igarashi Iroha came in to his life. It is a series filled with cute and sweet moments but the foreshadowing of what may happen in the future may give as the feels of the season.

Genres: Romance, School, Shoujo

And that concludes my list, hope you liked it and look forward for more anime related stuff coming from me. Have a good day everyone!

Good choices, Currently watching Golden Kamuy, it's one of my favourites this season, really well drawn, good action, realistic, good plot, character development. I love it.

It is nice to see something with a serious tone once in a while, it is a fresh breath of air especially with all the moe in the industry nowadays (tho I like them both).
