Animes to Watch: Game Series #1

in #anime6 years ago

And I am finally back again with my anime recommendations, and today I will be focusing on series that incorporates aspects of gaming in their setting. The genre hits two birds with one stone by combining two mediums of modern entertainment, which lead to the genre gaining massive popularity in the community in recent years.

1. No Game No Life

Most anime fans may have already heard of this one since it is quite famous for it's mix of comedy, fan service and exciting high-stake games.
It is about Sora and Shiro, siblings that got transported to another world called Disboard after defeating a God in a game of chess. Pretty standard start some might say, but what comes after getting transported is what makes NGNL as one of the fan favorites among the growing number of game themed animes.
To continue, upon arriving, they learned that every disputes and conflicts of all magnitude are settled thru games. The pair then set their sight on uniting the 16 races and eventually challenge the One True God of Disboard, Tet.

Genres: Game, Adventure, Comedy, Supernatural, Ecchi, Fantasy

2. Accel World

I have a little bias about this show since this is one of the shows that got me hooked into anime along with Ranma 1/2, SchoolRumble and Seto no Hanayome.
Most people who watched the show complained about the protagonist being a wimp, small and plump boy, but if you are going to judge a show based on that fact alone then you are gonna miss a lot of good shows and Accel World is one.
As for the plot, it follows the life of Haruyuki Arita (the plump boy) and the popular and beautiful Student Council Vice-president Kuroyukihime as they try to reach the top and meet the creator of Brain Burst (a program that accelerates brain waves that makes the user to perceive time as if it has completely stopped) to learn the purpose of creating the said program. However, they must first face and defeat the "Six Kings of Pure Color" (strongest players and faction leaders in the game) for them to reach level 10 and ultimately meet the creator of Brain Burst.

Genres: Action, Game, Sci-Fi, Romance, School

3. Log Horizon

A bunch of players suddenly got transported into the virtual game world of an MMORPG known as Elder Tale after an update in the game, forcing them to explore and adapt in the fantasy setting world of Elder tale that has now became their reality.A gamer named Shiroe along with his friends, Naotsugu and Akatsuki are among those who got transported into the game.
The show focuses more with the players adapting to their new world than trying to escape from it, giving it a true MMORPG game vibe to it. And instead of the usual sword wielding and combat type protagonist, the show is viewed thru the eyes of a master strategist that gives it a breath of fresh air.

Genres: Action, Game, Adventure, Magic, Fantasy

4. Overlord

As the game called Yggdrasil is about to shut down, a player named Momonga decided to stay up until the final second of the game, but to his surprise, even after the clock struck midnight, he is still logged in and the NPCs in the game seems to have become self aware and became capable of communicating with him.
Among the shows listed here, Overlord has a darker tone, probably because instead of a human, they have an undead as the protagonist and his servants are also beings that shows no compassion towards other races.
This is a fantasy world viewed in the perspective of Momonga and the merciless beings of Nazarick as Momonga tries to control the world in hope of learning the reason as to why things has turned out the way it did and to seek others that are in the same predicament as him.

Genres: Action, Game, Adventure, Supernatural, Magic, Fantasy

5. Sword Art Online

The series that received so much thrashing and hate from numerous fans but despite the negative comments thrown at the show, I personally think Sword Art Online (SAO) is not as bad as what most people make it out to be.
SAO is definitely not the first to introduce the game genre in anime, but it is among those that popularized it.
It is a show about a gamer by the name of Kazuto Kirigaya (Kirito) that got trapped inside the world of Aincrad along with thousands of other players at the initial release of the game. It was then stated that dying in-game means actual death in real life as well and that the only way for them to log out of the game is to clear all 100 floors of Aincrad.
Kirito now must adapt to his new world to survive and ultimately break free from the clutches of this deadly game but in order to do that he must first interact with other players that may turn out to be reliable allies or back-stabbing foes.

Genres: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Game, Romance
