Buzzfeed Commercial Shoot BTS 01 - Puppets

in #animation8 years ago (edited)

Hey there Steemit! I wanted to share some "Behind the Scenes" footage from a commercial I had shot a while back for Buzzfeed, called "Lettuce Turnip the Beet!" a two-minute long stop motion spot for Newman's Own, and filmed at my studio in Los Angeles.

Here's the finished commercial:

The production took roughly 6 weeks to complete and was shot with a 4-man crew: Including myself (Co-Animation Director), Drayson Helberg (Co-Animation Director), Derek Ortega (Animation Assistant), and Charles Corbin (DP). Here are some shots of the finished characters:

Here's the initial comp of all the characters together. I think they translated very well into 3D characters:

Next post I'll get into the actual making of the characters i.e. materials used, the process, etc. If you have any questions regarding the process let me know in the comments below and I'll try to incorporate it into my next post. I don't really want to get super technical unless it's requested.

Thanks for peepin!

really great! How much did the client provide to you in terms of creative input? I love all the gory details...

haha the gorier the better! And thanks for the questions!

I had complete creative control for the most part. Client didn't really understand the process, so by the time we had to begin production, everything I had sent in was approved. Everything from storyboards to character and set designs. They only thing they had creative control over was the music and branding.

wow that is lucky and awesome - It's one thing when clients don't understand the process, but another when they're trusting and impressed enough to actually let the artist do his thing. But clearly you took care in making it and are quite good at it, so lucky for them too!

Extremelly talented! You'll go far here on Steemit mate!
Plus it looks like you are already winning at life (working in something you love is a blessing not many count to have).
Cheers and best wishes.

Thank you so much! I feel welcomed already.

Wow, that's so cool! I always get so excited to see that people are still doing stop-animation! My favorite show when I was growing up was Gumby. I loved the way the characters looked compared to cartoons! Whenever I watch stop-motion animation now, all I can think about is how painstaking the work that went into it must have been! Very cool! Thanks so much for sharing! :)

Gumby is great! Would love to see him back on the air. :D The work doesn't actually have to be "painstaking," but it often times is I suppose...I'm hoping to shed some light on the medium for people who are interested, to get a better look at what goes into making a stop motion project.

once again, just terrific work... kudos to ya! :)

Thanks again, and the community has been great so far -- it's been hard keeping up with all the comments!

Wow! Haha! I didn't know you could squeeze that many food puns into one song! (I mustn't be trying hard enough!)

Can't wait to ketchup with you on your next post!

haha Yeah the writing team was really on point with with their puns. And Thanks, I appreciate it!

this is so neat simply amazing man nice work :)

Thank you! I appreciate it.

Very cool. The characters look delicious!

haha Thanks! This was a fun one to shoot.

Let us turnip, turnip, turnip, the beet... haha! amazing lyrics (I love word play!), great song and sound and a great looking animation too.

Very cool that you have your own studio. Must be a lot of work, but this looks and sounds like a dream job (for many)

No need to go technical on me. I'm a creative with two left-hands who loves it when people let me sneak a peek at their creative process. That's what you're doing. Keep it up!

Have a great day,

Vincent
