Basic Facts About Apes

in #animals9 years ago (edited)

Apes are animals closest to humans. Both apes and humans are members of an animal science group called primates. Monkeys are also primates, however, apes are different from monkeys in several ways. For example, apes have more complex brains than monkeys. Also, the monkey has a tail, but no apes.

Monkeys are divided into two categories: enlargement and small apes. Gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, and bonobos are great apes. They are bigger and smarter than little apes. Owa (gibbon) is a small ape.

Monkey Habitat

Monkeys live in warm, hot rainforests. Owa and orangutans are found in Southeast Asia. Gorillas and chimpanzees are found in western and central Africa. Bonobo has the smallest spread. They are only found in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country in Central Africa.

Owa and orangutans live mainly in trees. On the other hand, gorillas spend most of their time on the ground. Chimpanzees and bonobos tend to eat and sleep in trees-trees, but they mostly walk around on the mainland.

Physical characteristics

The smallest monkeys are gibbons. Most of the owas are only about 40 to 65 cm long. While the gorilla is the greatest ape. They can grow about 170 cm long and weigh 135 to 275 kilograms.

All monkeys have a layer of hair that is usually brown, tan, black, gray, or reddish. They have long arms and short legs. Gorillas, orangutans, and chimpanzees generally have strong arms and broad chests. Bonobodan owa body is slimmer. Like humans, all monkeys have a thumb that can bend and touch the other fingers. Ape's toes can also bend and touch the other toes.

Temperament

Most apes are active during the day. They usually sleep in pohondi trees at night. All apes, except gibbons, build nests for sleep. Most of the apes live in groups. Chimps and bonobos are the most social. They sometimes live in groups of more than 100 tails. However, adult male orangutans mostly live alone.

Monkeys eat plants, including fruits, leaves, stems, and grains. Sometimes they also eat insects or other small animals. Chimpanzees also hunt and kill monkeys and other mammals to eat.

Great apes are very intelligent. Some chimpanzees and orangutans in the wild use a stick or other object as a tool. For example, some chimps stick a stick to the ant or termite nest. Chimpanzees will pull sticks and eat insects attached there. Scientists study the apes' learning abilities in laboratories and zoos. They teach some great apes to communicate using sign language or symbol images. However, not all scientists agree that the apes really learn to use the language.

Reproduction

The reproduction of apes is similar to human reproduction. A female ape usually gives birth after pregnancy for seven to nine months. Usually a single baby will be born. Twins are considered rare. An ape baby is almost helpless during the first few months after birth. Adult monkeys can take care of their children for several years.

Under threat

Most species of apes are threatened with extinction, or the risk of dying completely in the wild. Humans have cut down trees in the forest where some monkeys live, destroying their habitat. Humans also kill monkeys to get their flesh. However, various parties also started trying to save these animals. Some countries have national parks to protect their natural apes and habitats. The law also prohibits the hunting or catching of rare apes.
