Should Animals Be Kept As Pets? My Thoughts On National Pet Day

in #animals6 years ago (edited)

With most of the world’s population obsessed with keeping at least one pet in their house, it was no surprise that #nationalpetday hashtag was trending on Twitter today. Are you also celebrating National Pet Day today? How do you celebrate this day?

Pet Lifestyle Expert & Animal Welfare Advocate Colleen Paige had founded 11th April as National Pet Day in 2005. Since then, this day has kept increasing in popularity. But I'm writing this piece to highlight that "animal welfare" doesn't automatically imply "animal rights".

Pet Culture

Worldwide, over 57% of households own some kind of pet. With 82% household owing pets, Argentina has the world’s highest rate of ownership followed by Mexico (81%), Brazil (76%). With about 70% of households owning at least one pet, USA stands at 5th rank.

Pets are mostly kept for companionship, to protect a home or property or their beauty and attractiveness. While the most common reasons for not owning a pet are lack of time, lack of suitable housing, and lack of ability to care for the pet when travelling.

While Dogs & Cats are most popular animals kept as pets, it can be any animal or bird including bunnies, mice, guinea pigs, parrots, pigeons, dove, squirrels, cows, goats, ponies, horses, camels, tiger & lion cubs, colourful and exotic birds, sparrows, turtles, frogs, ducks, hens, turkeys, monkeys, fishes, snakes, crabs, lizards, etc. There is no limitation to the definition of a pet. Millions of animals are spending their whole life in a human captivity and subservience as a pet.

According to Wikipedia, in 2013 pets outnumbered children four to one in the United States. So you can imagine how popular and acceptable it is to keep a pet.

Autonomy

When any animal is made to live according to human desire and in a man-made environment, we are obviously robbing it away from natural and independent life of its own. The animal becomes completely dependent on its owner for food and shelter. They ain't even left with any choice of their own social life. Thus making them our pets, we have taken away almost all the liberties of life from them.

Business

Pet industry itself has become a multi-billion dollar business. There are several puppy mills or breeding shops where exotic breed of puppies are “produced” to meet the rising demand of pet enthusiasts. Several of them, who do not sell in time have to be slaughtered mercilessly. Over-breeding and forced insemination makes the life of the mother painful and short.

Many birds and fishes are coloured and tattoed to look beautiful & attractive. All animals are fed an unnatural diet according to their owners understanding and availability. The pets had to be "trained" to adjust their life to suit the human needs.

Similarly, pet food industry is literally making a killing.

Speciesism

Strangely enough, all these pet keepers portrays themselves as animal lovers. But what kind of love it is when you keep one animal as a pet but eat the other as your food? Most of the pet owners live a non-vegan life. This reminds me of the title of Dr. Melanie Joy’s famed book Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows. This is what is called as speciesism – a discrimination on the basis of the species of any creature.

Pet Food

When you love an animal as pet, shouldn’t you be concerned of what you are feeding him / her? Do you consider it sane to take 100’s of lives to nourish and sustain just one life? Most pet food available today has a very cruel origin. Did you ever consider how many fishes, chickens or other animals’ lives were cut short to pack it into that pet food? Who is actually responsible for taking all those lives? Why do the love of all such animal lovers is so compartmentalized? Or they just want to own their pets under the guise of loving them?

Health Impact

Keeping a pet may be detrimental to their health due to inappropriate feeding at unnatural timings. Many pet owners don’t have sufficient knowledge of the care required for their pets. Consumption of chocolate or grapes may prove fatal for dogs. Several garden plants like aloevera, Easter lillies, philodendrons, begonia etc. could be either fatal or cause severe damage to their kidneys and other disorders in pets.

Housepets like dogs & cats in urban settings are highly susceptible to obesity which then cause several other dangerous diseases like diabetes, joint pain, liver problems, kidney failure and even cancer .

Health Risk To Pet Owners

Aside the health problems faced by pets, there are some risks for pet owners too. According to Wikipedia, health risks that are associated with pets include:

Aggravation of allergies and asthma caused by dander and fur or feathers
Falling injuries. Tripping over pets, especially dogs, causes more than 86,000 falls serious enough to prompt a trip to the emergency room each year in the United States. Among elderly and disabled people, these falls have resulted in life-threatening injuries and broken bones.
Injury, mauling, and sometimes death caused by pet bites and attacks
Disease or parasites due to animal hygiene problems, lack of appropriate treatment, and undisciplined behavior (faeces and urine)
Stress caused by behaviour of animals
Anxiety over who will care for the animal should the owner no longer be able to do so

Environmental Impact

Huge number of pets in the world also poses massive environmental problems.

One-fifth of all dietary energy and one-third of all animal derived energy are consumed by dogs & cats that are kept as pets in USA. They produce more than one-third mass of the feces as all Americans. Dog and cat animal product consumption is responsible for release of up to 64 ± 16 million tons CO2-equivalent methane and nitrous oxide, two most powerful greenhouse gasses.

As much as 1/4th of environmental impacts from animal production in terms of land use, water, fossil fuel, phosphate, and biocides is cause by the diet of American pets.

Considering all these, I don’t think it makes an ethical choice to keep any animal or bird as a pet.

I know, many of you will come up with an argument like we don’t buy a pet but adopt a rescued one or we don’t feed any non-vegetarian meals to our pet and raise them as vegans etc. But the whole point is we are not doing any good to them in the long run. Our activities only promote pet-culture.

If an animal is sick or rescued, it should be taken to a veterinary hospital or an animal shelter or sanctuary and should be released in the nature after treatment. If needed, they can be kept in some shelter or sanctuary for all their life. Why do we want to promote the practice of individual adoption and keep them as our pets? This only strengthens the evil of pet culture.

Our society has come up with so many pet related days like this National Pet Day, Take Your Dog To Work Day, Love Your Pet Day, Pet Day and Pet Months. I think all these days help in promoting pet culture and serve the ulterior motives of commercial pet industry.

In my country, I know that Jain religion is strongly against keeping any animal as pet.

  • Do you know any other such religion that is against the practice of enslaving animals?

interesting topic.i too have a pet (pomeranian breed).we can conduct debate competition on this.
My answer is both yes and no.
we should not kept them as pets.because we dont have right to own it.it has some freed and live according to it.
On otherside we can kept them as pets because we tool care on them,on their health,we provide sufficient food.so we satisfy needs of it.thats why she loves its owner and even sacrifice its life for him.
Thank u

First we should understand that this Nature has created all animals independent and no animal is meant to be dependent on humans. Humans have made some animals dependent on them because of their own selfish interest. Animals' needs should not be dependent on humans. The whole discussion is about how to make them independent of humans. There is no debate at all.

This was really interesting to read. I have never thought of that broad spectrum of pet owner ship.
I'm against almost all pet keeping with the exception of dogs and cats.
Where I live in Sweden we have 0 street dogs and I don't think anybody would accept a dog living on the street here.
So releasing dogs that have gotten used to living in a house would be cruel to the dog. They would have no street manner, no pack and not knowing where to search for food.
It might work in other countries where it's a part of the culture and street dogs is common.
But I do not agree that we should not keep animals that is already used to live with humans.

The number of pets is how ever a huge issue. Here in Sweden too since a lot of people don't take care of them, need to re-home them for any kind of reason.
That's why we should work on keeping the numbers down.
Spay and neuture should be mandatory and also to make it illegal with puppy mills and back yard breeding.

We should all work towards informing about the cruelty behind the pet industry and you did a wonderful job with this post :)
I'm resteeming since I love to awaken this kind of debates.

I can understand your feelings for dogs & cats. But have you considered what a pet owner is supposed to feed a cat? A cat is a carnivorous animal and can't thrive without meat. Although some vegans are trying to raise them on a plant-based diet but that's very unnatural. Dogs are said to be omnivorous and can do well on a plant-based diet. But how many pet owners raise them as vegan?

I know, dogs are a domesticated species and probably won't survive in the forests. But cats can. For dogs, I'd like to propose several mini-sanctuaries or shelters where they can roam freely under expert care and support. So that all dogs can be raised vegan under expert observation and 100% of them can be spayed and neutered. Why should one keep them in their house!

In your country, there may not be any stray dogs but they can be trained to scavenge food on their own. It is their natural behaviour which we have suppressed because of our desire to pet them. Have you heard the story of Christian, the lion?

I'm curious to know why would you want to make an exception for cats & dogs for keeping them as pets.

Yeah I see we have a lot of same views on how dogs and cats should be treated I just didn't think about evolving my reply about them.

I totally agree with you that cats cannot be healthy on a vegan diet, at least what I know of.
Cat's can survive but I also think there is a climate issue and the fact that I don't want the poor cats to freeze to death in the winter since a lot of them are not suited for the -15 degrees celcious or more we can get here in Sweden during the winter.
In a warmer climate sure but we also need to keep them spayed and neutured so they don't kill off all the birds.

According to dogs so have I never thought that way. It's a great idea to create mini sanctuaries where they can be free and run around.

They probably can, I just can't see the population in Sweden agreeing on that. As I said we get really cold temperatures here and many of them would freeze to death in the winter.
I'm all in for shelters and sanctuaries.

I think every country need to find a way that is suited for their climate, population and so on.
Here we have laws that say you can't leave your dog or cat longer than 4 hours alone.
There is of course a lot to be done and I think that establishing mini-sanctuaries would be a great idea along with laws of neutering and spaying pets.

IMHO, if a country's climate is unsuitable for any animal species, those animals should not be given shelter in that country. Take in those animals from other countries for whom your country's environment is most suitable and move out all unsuitable animals by finding the places best suitable for them.

I understand how you think and I can agree. The question is how would that be implemented? Since the general population here does not agree.
It's one thing to talk about utopic opinions here but how could that be implemented without causing a riot?

Well, there could be several ways and steps to implement it but more important than that is to spread the idea that a better solution exists. Unless and until we (the masses) understand the idea behind any proposed action, it has a high probability of failure. But once the idea sets in, solution crops out.

That's true. I do think how ever it will take a few years for people to start think that way when it comes to cats and dogs. We have a way of humanice them and implement our human feelings on them. Making it impossible to think why we should not have them in our home and take care of them.
I am how ever often the vegan with the unpopular opinion :D

Interesting topic ... We have a dog - NOT any breeded one and we didn't BUY him. When he was like 3 months old, he came home and stayed. He is the one people call as a stray dog ... We have tons of issues with people around for keeping him .. but he is freely roaming around, no artificial stuff is ever used on him except for the occasional bathing ... he eats everything that we eat, catches rats ...

apprecaite the witness vote ..

Good to see you supporting an innocent dog. I didn't mean any offense to pet owners per se. But I wanted to draw the attention towards the broader issue surrounding pet culture. I appreciate your efforts to let him live a natural life.

All healthy animals should be self sufficient in finding their food on their own and should not be made dependent on humans. In case, if a pet owner abandons a pet one day for some reason, can that pet live on its own? So I feel, we should care for the natural resources so that a natural habitat is available to all animals that is sufficient to meet their needs.
