Chalkhill Blue Butterfly, Norfolk, UK

in #animals7 years ago

Male Chalkhill Blue Butterfly (Polyommatus coridon) from Warham Camp, Norfolk, UK.

As the name suggests these lovely butterflies are only found on Chalk and limestone downs where their larval food plant (Horseshoe vetch) occurs. They also have a facinating relationship with ants where the caterpillars secrete honeydew to feed them and then the pupa develops within the ants nest where they are taken.
