Trimming Sheep Hooves

During our time at @mericanhomestead we taught an impromptu class on trimming sheep hooves. We had asked @hansjurgen if there was anything we could do to help bless them while we were on the homestead. As fellow homesteaders we completely understand the never ending list of things to do and we figured there had to be something on their list that we could help with. So, trimming sheep hooves is what was chosen, which turned into an impromptu class. It is necessary to watch your sheep (and goat) hooves for overgrowth and injury. We tend to trim our sheep & goat hooves 2-3 times a year. We call it "mani-pedi" day on the farm and everyone gets their hooves cleaned, trimmed, and salved. We use my Black Walnut Anti-Fungal Salve after trimming (www.themyrrhmaid.com) to help prevent any type of issues.

I want you to notice how @jal627 is "sitting" on the sheep. He is not hurting the sheep at all. We catch them and gently turn them on their side. We sit behind their back with one leg rested across their neck and the other one across their abdomen. This applies just enough pressure to keep them still and calm. We have found this to be the easiest method for both us and the sheep.

It is important that you make sure both sides of each hoof is equally trimmed. I use the trimming scissors and carefully trim each hoof. I check for signs of infection or injury as well.
