I have never seen a koala in the wild, a few wombats though. I held one at the zoo up your way and they make some unbecoming sounds.

Oh yeah, they got some pretty guttural sounds. I saw a video on Youtube where one was "crying" as he had been kicked out of a tree. Pretty mournful. Link below. Doesn't make koala's look too cute and cuddly though. Possibly where the drop bear myth came from?
