For years, China has been buying donkeys, importing them from everywhere in the world.

China is buying donkeys to take advantage of their skins to make therapeutic products. "Ejiao" or gelatin skin donkeys is one of the three treasures in traditional Chinese medicine. It is used to treat a wide range of diseases, from colds, to insomnia, and impotence. Demand for this product has increased unmatched. For this purpose, millions of donkeys are slaughtered around the world, their skins are shipped to China to be melted, and gelatin is made, which some believe will preserve the freshness of youth and prolong their age.
North China's Dong'e province is the focus of donkey gelatin production, with 100 factories melting thousands of their skins and turning them into gelatin a week. After the domestic stocks of donkeys are depleted, China is importing them from developing countries to keep up with rising demand. The number of donkeys in China has shrunk from 11 million in 1990 to 6 million at present; due to large-scale slaughter of the gelatin therapeutic industry.

As demand for donkey skin increased, various countries in Africa, Asia, South America and the Middle East began to supply China with donkeys for the ejiao market. However, some governments have banned the sale of donkeys to China, as they have observed a significant decline in their numbers. Nigeria banned the export of its donkey after noting that it had increased its trade more than three times in one year, especially to Chinese markets.
Burkina Faso also banned the export of donkeys after noting that 45,000 of them had been slaughtered within six months and a total reduction of 1.4 million. But some countries such as Kenya and South Africa are still working to increase the number of donkeys to meet Chinese demand.
