It's not a butterfly, but it's close relative the moth. Moths tend to be less colorful and are most active at night. During the day, they are dormant with their wings closed to camouflage themselves from predators. Some moths have spectacular wings when they are open. One such case is the lunar Moth. They are among the largest in the species with a wing span of three-four inches.
