HERPING FOR SALAMANDERS (Central Wisconsin)
While in Wisconsin, my oldest son and I spent some time together on Father's Day looking for salamanders along the Plover River.
It's a good thing that I had him with me too, since he found both of the species that we encountered that day.
Originally we were searching for the Blue Spotted Salamander (Ambystoma laterale) in a spot that is a known habitat for them. However, the first salamander we encountered was a young Four-Toed Salamander (Hemidactylium scutatum), which is the least common of all seven of the Wisconsin salamanders. It had been so long since I had herped in that area that I even forgot the name of this one at the time.
Anyway, we had lots of fun on our adventure and thankfully it paid off too! Enjoy the video!

I loved every minute of this. It took me back to my salamander searches at Alma Pond in the southern tier of NYS. I learned stuff on that Fathers Day walk with you and your son, the jumping carp, low-growing blueberries, jewelweed...
"They're out there son." is my favorite line.

Cool man! I saved a salamander that ended up in our window well somehow. The thing was huge! I tried to be all 'Papa Pepper' brave and cool. Lol, tried to take a picture of me holding it but it wiggled and i freaked and dropped it. 😂
