Whales live in the oceans but do not belong in the family of fish. Whales are mammals in the cetacean group. Like other mammalian animals, the whale has the following characteristics:
- breathe through the lungs
- have feathers (less than land-based animals, almost nothing for adult whales)
- hot-blooded
- have breast-feeding organs and children.
- has four heart chambers
Ancient whales evolved in the middle of the Eocene period, approximately 50 million years ago. One of the earliest known whales was Basilosaurus, which had a small, protruding, prominent head. Basilosaurus along 25 meters long.
The fossil remains indicate that whales originate from the hoof-shaped landmongers, possibly from animals such as Mesonychid (animal-like wolves living in coastal coasts) that have settled back into the sea some 50 million years ago. Another possibility of another animal turned into a whale, is Ambulocetus, a sealed mammal with a seal, 3 meters long weighing 650 pounds.
Today, there are two types of whales, namely toothed whale Odontoceti, and Baleen whale, Mysticeti. Odontoceti whales with teeth are predators that feed on fish, cuttlefish, and marine mammals (sea), have a respiratory pit. Baleen whales are also larger than toothed whales and have structures known as bronze baleen, to filter planktons rather than water, and have two respiratory pits.
This killer whale, or so-called orca, which is classified as a dolphin, has a unique ability. A study released in January 2018 revealed that scientists had taught a killer whale to imitate human speech.
The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, reveals that an orca is capable of imitating words, including "hello," "bye bye," and "one-two." The scientists studied a 14-year-old killer whale named Wilkie who had previously been trained in another study to copy other orca acts.
The study also found that whales can mimic foreign sounds from other orcas, including raspberry sounds that blow. They want to see how flexible the killer whale can mimic the sound. Using computer analysis shows that whales can make relatively quick-sounding clones. The pope can imitate human voices in the first experiment.
