The ajolote (Ambystoma mexicanum) or axolotl  also known as a “Mexican walking fish”, is an interesting Mexican amphibian, endemic and exceptional. Its name comes from Náhuatl āxōlōtl («ā» -atl- = water, «xōlōtl» = smooth-skinned animal: "animal with smooth skin of water”. Unlike many amphibians this curious little animal does not go through a process of metamorphosis, 25 cm long with variable colors, has four legs with fingers and a tail. It is a completely aquatic species. 

 It is endemic to the Valley of Mexico, especially the Xochimilco channel system, before the population decreased drastically it was common to find them in nearby lakes such as Texcoco and Chalco. Its habitat is shallow waters with lots of vegetation. Its current distribution is limited only to the central area of ​​the Mexico. Because your teeth are not ready to tear swallow completely, although it is resistant to prolonged fasting, your diet can be very varied, from meat, small peses, worms, worms, and other insects that inhabit the lakes. Basically, eat anything you can catch, which includes mollusks and other amphibians. 

The axolotl has a gelatinous skeleton that never gets calcified, with a feathered appearance on the outer gills, without eyelids and round eyes, it is an animal that has the capacity to regenerate, from the tail or limbs to the vital organs such as the brain or the heart, recovering the full function of the system in a couple of months. At the moment it is cataloged like a species in critical danger of extinction since the area of ​​occupation is smaller to 10km squared and its habitat is severely fragmented and contaminated. It is estimated that by 2020 or 2025 there will be no axolotls unless action is taken to save them.

El ajolote  (Ambystoma mexicanum) o axolotl también conocido como “el pez caminante”, es un interesante anfibio mexicano, endémico y excepcional. Su nombre proviene del náhuatl āxōlōtl («ā» -atl- = agua, «xōlōtl» = animal de piel lisa: " animal de piel lisa de agua"). A diferencia de muchos anfibios este curioso animalito no pasa por un proceso de metamorfosis, de 25 cm de largo con colores variables, tiene cuatro patas con dedos y una cola. Es una especie completamente acuática.  

Es endémico del Valle de Mexico, en especial del sistema de canales de Xochimilco, antes de que la población disminuyera drásticamente era común encontrarlos en los lagos cercanos como Texcoco y Chalco. Su habitat es de aguas poco profundas con mucha vegetación. Su distribución actual se limita únicamente a la zona central de la República Mexicana. Debido a que sus dientes no están preparados para desgarrar traga por completo, aunque es resistente al ayuno prolongado, su dieta puede ser muy variada, desde carne, pequeños peses, gusanos, lombrices, y otros insectos que habitan los lagos. Básicamente, come cualquier cosa que pueda atrapar, lo que incluye moluscos y otros anfibios.  

El ajolote tiene un esqueleto gelatinoso que nunca llega calcificarse, con un aspecto de plumas en las branquias externas, sin párpados y de ojos redondos, es un animal que tiene la capacidad de regenerarse, desde la cola o extremidades hasta los órganos vitales como el cerebro o el corazón, recobrando la completa función del sistema en un par de meses. Actualmente es catalogado como una especie en peligro critico de extinción ya que el area de ocupación es menor a 10km cuadrados y su habitat se encuentra severamente fragmentado y contaminado. Se calcula  que para 2020 o 2025 no habrá ajolotes si no se actúa para salvarlos.
