What are pet therapy breeds?
Dogs are the most requested animals in Pet Therapy and this because "the dog is the best friend of man" is not just a saying, in this case his role is fundamental and deeply important.
The dog is a dependent animal, apart from rare cases, needs to be looked after and sees in the master his own pack leader, who can afford to scold him, who decides when he has to eat, when to take it out, how to make it live, in short, is really all his world for the four-legged friend. How many times have we seen dogs lick the tears of their masters or crouch on their legs if they were sad, barking at someone if it seemed a threat and in the most extreme cases growl and bite.
Let us remember then that the animal does not judge, does not refuse, gives itself totally, stimulates smiles, helps socialization, increases self-esteem and has no prejudices.
Assuming that all breeds of dogs can give relief to those who have diseases and disorders of various kinds, there are some breeds that are more predisposed for the Pet Therapy than others. Golden retrievers and Labradors are such gentle, docile and loving races that they are chosen for any kind of problem the patient may have.
Specifically, however, for those with physical problems, motor disabilities, whether they are permanent, or not and for those who are blind, the breed that is always recommended is the German shepherd who, thanks to his natural inclination to learning and formidable physical gifts, gives the patient concrete support.
For the deaf, however, smaller animals are preferable: Terrier, Chihuahua, Papillon, Poodle and Zwergschnauzer.
Who unfortunately has a serious illness and is in a terminal state, must get a dog above all a support from the psychological and moral point of view, this is why animals are recommended particularly stable, sweet and faithful, but at the same time discreet and not too much intrusive. Shepherd dogs stand out for their balance: from German Shepherds to Scottish Shepherd to Bobtail and Briard. Instead, if you want a smaller dog, you can bet on Spaniel and Barboni.
Those suffering from depression, anxiety, panic attacks and mental distress can find real help in the presence of a loving and peaceful dog, willing to be pampered. Among the smaller breeds we find the Maltese, the Cavalier King Charles spaniel, the Shih-tzu, the Bolognese, the Jack russell terrier, the French Bouledogue and the Poodle, while those looking for a bigger animal can opt for Bassett hound, Boxer , Terranova, Labrador and Golden retriever.
