POTOO
I was lucky enough to to learn a little bit about these incredibly unique birds. I believe they are worth sharing for those of you that have never heard of a Potoo before now.
POTOO
The Potoo bird can be found in every Central and South American country except Chile. They are related to Nightjars and Frogmouths. There are seven different species. A Potoo has a proportionally large head for its body size, long wings and a long tail. The large head is dominated by a massive broad bill and huge eyes. The bill while large and broad, is also short, barely projecting past the face. The Potoo bird also has an unusual slit in their eye lids which allows them to sense movement even when their eyes are closed.
The Potoo is a nocturnal bird. During the day, they perch upright on tree stumps and branches, camouflaged to look like the tree. They will blend in and freeze as their primary defense from predators.
A Potoo will lay one single spotted egg, typically on top of a tree stump. They do not make a nest for their egg. Both parents share the responsibility for incubating the egg and raising the chick. Once the baby Potoo can no longer hide under the wings of the parents, it will also take on the freeze position when needed. A baby Potoo is white, so it will usually resemble moss while the parent will resemble the tree.
Beetles are a large part of this birds diet but they will also eat moths, grasshoppers and termites. A small bird was once found in the stomach of a northern Potoo. The Potoo will swallow its prey whole without crushing it.
Cute species, right?
