FROG ROOM FRIDAY! A Weekly Poison Dart Frog Update-ORIGINAL CONTENT

in #animals6 years ago

Happy Frog Room Friday Friends!!!

Welcome to the second installment of FROG ROOM FRIDAY! Is it just me, or is the name really catchy??? :)

This evening, I want to share some development pictures from one of our breeding projects. One of the most common questions we get(BESIDES "ARE THEY POISONOUS?") is "what does the process look like?"

Well, lucky for you I have pictures of our Dendrobates auratus "Costa Rica" or green-and-black poison dart frogs!

I'm going to share the "cutest" stage with you first, and work backwards.:

^^^This is the stage where the tadpole's gills have disappeared, the lungs have developed, and it starts to breathe air. At this point, the little guy stops eating and absorbs it's tail for nutrients. He will stay near the water until the tail is fully absorbed.

Moving backwards, is of course, the tadpole:

^^^These guys love to snack on the algae in the rearing cups!

Backward still is the point when the egg starts to develop into a tadpole:

^^^Sorry for the blurry pic..Its hard to focus on these little guys!!! If you look closely, you be able to see the gill branches.

One of the coolest stages...Cell division and development!:

^^^This is the point where kids start to get excited about it, because they can see "stuff start to happen."

And the beginning, the egg:

^^^We always get super excited when we pull a clutch from the tanks!

Well, there you have it. Brief, yet hopefully informative. I hope Frog Room Friday, or FRF, catches on. My son and I love these guys and want to share our interests with others.

I certainly cannot leave without sharing a picture of one of our mature auratus, for reference:

That's some cool stuff. What are you doing with the frogs you're producing?

We have sold a bunch. I’ve also held a few back.

Yep, the little guy and me. He’s the brains of the operation!
