What a difference just 2 weeks of compassion makes for a homeless dog (disturbing images)

in #animals3 years ago

A few weeks ago we discovered a very young dog with such severe mange that his face was covered in sores and his eyes could barely open. He was also in severe danger of additional parasites because of the open would attracting both flies and ticks as well as other parasites.

Keep in mind that mange is itself a form of parasite infection but it is so itchy that the dogs simply cannot help themselves as far as scratching is concerned.

When we found this little guy, he was still extremely friendly despite being in a constant state of pain. This is one of the things that I find so heartbreaking about the nature of most dogs. They have been neglected or even abused to a terrible degree sometimes all of their lives, yet they still have a wonderful nature towards people.

We are at a point in our funding that we are in "triage" mode and even though we routinely see dogs in just as bad of shape as this little guy was, we have to pick and choose which ones we are going to help. Puppies are special to most people and I have to admit that this played a rather large role in us deciding the help this poor pup.

This is the "after" shot taken just a few weeks after we found him. We do not have the space available to have taken care of him at our facilities but we went out to administer medicated baths every couple of days and also treated him with a broad spectrum edible anti-parasite medication. Just two weeks later and he doesn't even look like the same animal but I can promise you that it is.

We have asked the locals to help us to keep an eye on him and now that he doesn't look diseased they were a lot more willing to help out, especially once we provided them with the food so it wouldn't cost them anything.

We will continue to fight to help all the animals that we can but I wanted to showcase how just a little bit of compassion can completely change a dog's (or a cat's) life. If we had not saw and intervened in this pup's life, it is very likely that he would not have lived much longer. Mange leads to excessive scratching, excessive scratching leads to open wounds, open wounds lead to even more parasites, and parasites result in a slow and painful death.

We will continue to fight this as much as we can but we do enjoy celebrating small victories like this. I can only hope that the locals where we found this guy will treat him a bit better now as they have promised.

I realize that most of the people that read this are unable to help us directly but I encourage you to get involved in animal welfare in your own community and most importantly to adopt and not buy animals. There are so many creatures out there whose lives could be unbelievably changed for the better with just a little help.
