Terrible wounds on street dogs need immediate attention (Graphic images)

We encounter things like this on street dogs a lot more often than we would like to. These dogs who are left to fend for themselves on the streets encounter a wide range of dangers as they live their lives and almost all of them are done to them, in one way or another, by humans.

This particular injury is one that is a bit of a mystery because we cannot tell what could have happened to get such a large circular wound in the middle of a dog's back.

We do not know the history of this dog and he has never been cared for by us before. We had started to venture out a little bit from one of the temple projects that we work on and encountered a small pack that was mostly quite small dogs. Despite his horrible injury, he was still very approachable and easily lured into the kennels. The wound on his back is a tricky one and probably one of the most dangerous parts of a dog's body for a wound like this to be on because the dog cannot reach it with its tongue in order to keep it clean.

Would like this will quickly become infected with parasites that will eat the dog alive, slowly but eventually killing him.

We seem to have gotten to this dog early enough to that this can be safely treated and there doesn't appear to be any other damage. We can only guess about how this happened but because the wound is so clean (no tears) we believe this was done by some sort of weapon used on it from an angry human who doesn't want stray dogs on their property. This happens a lot more often than you might think because in the absence of any sort of animal control the residents are sometimes forced to take matter into their own hands.

These two, who are in the same pack, were immediately taken to the vet and their wounds were cleaned, they were treated for parasites, and sewn back up. They will be re-released back where we found them in a few days.

Thankfully, most of these procedures are done for us for next to no cost by the Bangkok Krabi Animal Hospital, who has partnered with us for many years. We could not do the work that we do without their generous assistance.

We always hate to encounter these sorts of things but are happy that we found it before the wound had an opportunity to get a lot worse than it was - which would have certainly happened in just a few weeks' time.
