Why and how you should make your own dog food.

Dear Dog Owners,

As a proud owner of a fur baby, I'm sure that you will want to do everything in your power to give your pooch a LONG, HEALTHY life.

We spoil them in any way we can (we buy toys, treats, accessories, nice smelling shampoos etc), but we often neglect to consider what's really important, which is what's inside that kibble that your buddy gobbles in each day.

Dogs can't speak for themselves, but if they could, I'm sure they would say NO, NOT AGAIN! Give me some REAL fiber, vitamins and protein!

First, let me start by explaining that commercial dog food (dry or wet) is processed food, and is filled with artificial flavors, colorants and other sketchy ingredients that we fail to identify on the labels of our expensive commercial dog food. Check this interview about how to read labels on dog food here

Basically, you are harming your dog by feeding him commercial food, even the more expensive brands such as Royal Canin, Eukanuba and many others. How would you like to eat Cheerio's or McDonald's every day?

The best thing you can do for your dog (as well as for yourself!) is to give him some fresh home-made food made from natural ingredients, which in the end is much cheaper anyway!

Here's how I do it:

Recipe:
Cook lentils and rice (2-3 cups of rice one cup of lentils) together in a rice cooker. Add lots of water for the lentils to soak up. In the meantime, boil 4 carrots and 2 chayote in water. When soft, mash them (my dog leaves out the big pieces otherwise), and at the end add the ground meat (1 pound) and chicken (1 pound), as well as the rice and lentils. I also leave in some of the water from the veggies to keep it moist.

I don't cook the meat. I just let the heat of the other ingredients superficially cook the pieces. The meat will retain more nutrients that way, but you can cook it if you prefer!

You can also substitute chayote for broccoli, spinach, zucchini, squash, and the rice for potatoes.

IMPORTANT: Never feed your dog onions, garlic, chocolate, avocado, nuts and salt/pepper!

Let me know how it goes, and trust me. Your dog will thank you for it, and your bank account tooIMG_3914.JPG
