Facts About The Binturong

in #animals6 years ago (edited)

In this day and age, there are literally millions upon millions of species of animals roaming the very same world we live in around us. However, some species are more popular or well-known than others. One such specie of animal that is perhaps not a house-hold name or in other words, unpopular, is the binturong. One might ask, "What is a binturong"?. In this article, the answer to that question as well as other questions pertaining to this unique and rather ignored specie of animal will be looked at and discussed. What is the binturong?First and foremost, the binturong is better known as a bearcat. This animal hails from the regions of South and Southeast Asia and is a omnivorous mammal (which is strange, considering it's called a "bearcat"!). Furthermore, the binturong can be recognized by it's black fur, long, heavy body and short, stout legs. It also have a rather bushy tail, shortened nose, large eyes and sharp claws.  When was the binturong first discovered? The binturong was first discovered way back in the year 1822 by a man named Thomas Stamford Raffles in a region called Malacca. Since then, the binturong has been familiarized with native populations in not just South and Southeast Asia as mentioned above in the previous paragraph but also in the Philippines.  What does the binturong eat?The binturong's diet is that of a omnivore. This means it only feeds on smaller animals such as rats, fish, birds, bugs and worms. Furthermore, the binturong has also been known to eat various fruits such as apples, oranges and bananas as well as figs. What type of behavioral patterns does the binturong possess? The binturong is known to be a relatively shy animal but will not hesitate to defend itself when it feels threatened, harassed or challenged. Moreover, the binturong is both active during the day and night and uses it's tail to communicate with other members of it's species as well as to move around.
