The most intriguing thing about this beautiful little insect is its hearing ability. It has a hearing ability similar to that of humans, although it ears are located at the legs of the insect while that of the human is located on the head. Also, its ear is just less than a millimetre long.
While the human ear can hear the sound of frequency ranging from 20 hertz to 20,000 hertz, the ear of Katydid can hear sounds from 5,000 hertz to about 50,000 hertz enabling it to be able to distinguish between the sound of other Katydid and predator with a similar sound.
Researchers have discovered that an organ located inside the ear of the insect named acoustic vesicle is responsible for the receiving, converting and analyzing sounds. This has made researchers conclude that the ears of the Katydid can be imitated in the field of technology to produce sophisticated hearing devices that are very small in size.
