Cockroach milk could be the 'superfood' of the future
With a high concentration of vitamins, healthy fats and antioxidants, the cockroach or 'Diploptera punctata', also known as cockroach cypress or cockroach beetle from the Pacific would be the future of food.
This species of insect is the only one known to date that gives birth to live offspring, which it feeds with a type of 'milk' rich in protein crystals to feed its young.
These protein crystals contain three times the amount of energy in buffalo milk, which in turn has more than cow's milk.
In India, researchers from the Institute of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine will sequence the genes that produce these crystals to see if they can be replicated in laboratories.
