Undoing the Past for Abused Animals
It can be challenging dealing with the effects of abuse and neglect in the animals that we take in. When we take in a previously abused animal, we are also taking responsibility for their past in the sense that it's up to us to help them forgive and let go.

We have 5 cats and two dogs. All but one of the dogs were rescued by us. In each case, it took some time to gain their trust. There are also three cats that hang out side on our porch that have been severely traumatized by humans and we don't know if they will ever come to trust us. Still, Andrea feeds them every morning and night. I think they know they can trust us enough to eat the food we give and they wait for us to put the food down, but they won't come near us.
I have seen this too in severely abused or neglected animals. Sometimes all we can do is what they will let us do to help. Keep doing what you're doing, offer what comfort you can, when you can.
