I have learned a great deal about the rhythms of empathy from my dogs. I may think about a rhythm in some sophisticated way that would never occur to my dog. Dogs and infants do not think the way we do. But they pick up the world's rhythms and respond rhythmically to the world. With an animal you are totally immersed in the bodily, nonverbal level of communication.
