Snakes, misunderstood, unnecessarily feared. Come meet mine :)

in #animals6 years ago

Hey guys I thought I might introduce you all to some of my snakes :)

People tend to be scared of snakes, out of all the animals we have people are most scared of snakes and birds (weird), something about the way they move and feel is so foreign to us, like spiders with 8 legs, its just a little creepy and unnerving for some. I've actually found most people are quite surprised when they first hold or touch one, they expect them to be slimy or something but they actually feel quite nice, and when they wrap themselves around you and climb on you like a tree you can feel the incredible muscles they possess.

There are ways snakes kill their prey, some use venom, some use constriction. In Australia most of our snakes are venomous and very much so at that, in fact in the state that I live there isn't a single native non venomous serpent here>

Anyway, come meet some of my friends :)

Cuddles the party snake :D

This is cuddles, we've had cuddles for about 5 years now and he's starting to get a bit old and grumpy. Cuddles is a Brisbane python (pythons are restrictors) and is pretty friendly. We named him cuddles because when you get him out he squeezes a lot tighter than any of the others

This sis our olive python Ollie... yes very inventive name. He is our youngest snake at the moment but will grow to be our largest, at around 5m when he's fully grown he can eat crocodiles and deer. Juvenile snakes tend to be more aggressive with people most likely because they aren't used to being handled. But with persistence you can tame them, all it really takes is getting bitten a lot. Every time you reach in he will try and bite you but if you just grab him and pretend you don't care then he gets used to it, If you show hesitation and fear they can tell.

This is Big mama, She's a Bredli python from northern Australia. She is our heaviest snake at the moment weighing somewhere around 7-8kg at a guess, possibly more. It doesn't seem like much but she is basically all muscle and could easily overpower me if she wanted. Lucky shes fairly old and likes to just hang out in the sun and relax, very sweet girl and great with kids :)

Yes the snakes enjoy wearing the hats, don't dress-shame my animals.

This is Diego, Sadly Diego passed away not long back, He was 17 years old and the first snake we ever had, he was a sweety and he will be missed. :( R.I.P Diego.

That's 3 of the 7 snakes we have here at the moment and if you wanted to see any of the others you can see them in my video from a week or so ago :)

Please don't be unnecessarily scared of snakes, they really are more scared of you than you are of them and they will only attack out of fear or if they need to eat. If you find one in your home or office etc, try and keep it contained in a small area with all doors/windows shut and call a professional. They can be notoriously good at hiding and can curl up and fit through tiny spaces.

I love snakes XD Don't really want to get the license required to house one though! A friend has a pet snake named Fluffy and it gets draped on me almost every visit.

Fluffy, such an ironic name haha. They're cool, I let the relaxed ones sit with me on the couch or in the sun, the others try and move too much so I have to keep an eye on them. :P

LOOK AT THOSE SNOOTS!
