Animals my mum owns/rescued including saltwater crocodile billy

in #animals7 years ago (edited)

My mum runs a Glamping and widlife rescue in rural victoria australia.
She has quite the collection of animals many whom have been rescued. Meet the fam guys :)

lets start with the most impressive, Billy the saltwater croc
Billy the croc.jpg

Billy is currently 6 years old approximately 50-60kg ( you try getting in to weigh him) and about 2m long.
he was rescued from a leather farm in northern australia and now enjoys a fairly lavish life in the wilds of rural vic.

Saltwater crocodiles can live to be up to 150 years old and grow to be 6m long, but once billy outgrows his current enclosure he will be moved to a state wildlife forest somewhere up north.

Above is my mums fearless and stupid cat Mr bigglesworth checking out billy when he was still young. hes a big 9kg badass cat so nothing really scares him.

Up next is my personal favourite carlos the cockatoo.

We found Carlos roaming a residential street in Melbourne and made many attempts to find his true family( he was clearly and escaped and loved pet) but after 6 months he moved to beechworth with the other animals and has loved life there ever since. He is very chatty and knows many phrases including "step up" (which is what we say when we want him to get onto our arm) 'hello" "who's a naughty boy" (because hes quite cheeky hes learned this when he gets in trouble" and his name Carlos. He is pictured below with a friend he made and now whenever they're apart he suffers from mild separation anxiety the poor thing.

The baby goats
( not so baby now) their guardian sherman the alpacca and Patte the goose

Sherman is an alpaca and his job is to guard the other barn animals from wild dogs, foxes and wild snakes. Hes a big softy and is scared of people but if anything tries to attack his brood he becomes aggressive and very defensive. Alpacas are often used in farming to protect livestock and are very similar to Llamas but slightly smaller.

There are also a wide variety of lizards snakes, turtles and frogs that call it home, below is a newly acquired Bredly python, she is approximately 2m long and is incredibly strong. None of the snakes we own are poisonous, they kill their prey by constriction with their incredibly powerful muscles. when she wraps around my arm or leg you can feel how powerful she is and if she wanted to she could quite easily strangle me. Luckily for me shes very friendly and has never attacked a person to date :P

These lizards are all endemic to Australia and can be found in the bush or even in some residential areas.
From left to right we have a stumpy tailed lizard(named stumpy lol) his tail has evolved to look similar to his head so if a predator attacks he has a 50% chance of surviving and being able to get away.
middle is a thorny dragon, His thorns are actually quite soft to the touch and are meant to scare off predators and make him look more aggressive than he actually is. we actually have 3 thorny dragons but this is the biggest and he is usually kept separated from the others as he is the dominant male and will sometimes attack the others to show his dominance.
on the right is the very well known blue tongue lizard aptly named for their very blue colored tongues. this one is quite friendly but if you find one in the wild and try to pick it up they can bite. it isn't a painful bite but they also hiss to warn you and it sounds quite intimidating, almost like a snake.

Note all the party animals, my mum is an oddball and likes to dress them up for special occasions.

there are also some newly acquiredbabeh emus.jpg baby emus :)

and who could forget Lenny the lace monitor, hes not actually poisonous but he has a lot of bad bacteria in his mouth that can cause quite the nasty bite. Lenny has a patch on his back where he was unfortunately electrocuted by a light in a former enclosure before we got him, he has made a full recovery but unfortunately the skin still hasnt fully grown back but he has a badass scar now.

Our beechworth animal family is always growing and soon to be joining them will be a pair of baby deers, a pack of wallabys and in a few years some Meerkats!!!!
