Switzerland Bans Boiling Lobsters Alive
Lobsters and lobster lovers (not to be confused who love dining on them) rejoice! The Swiss government has apparently decided to ban boiling them alive as part of sweeping new animal rights laws.
The new law states “live crustaceans, including the lobster, may no longer be transported on ice or in ice water. Aquatic species must always be kept in their natural environment. Crustaceans must now be stunned before killing them.”
Apparently, restaurant owners are unhappy because they will have to retrofit their kitchens with aquariums (a practice that already occurs in most Asian restaurants that serve live seafood), tools to administer electric shocks (phasors, perhaps?) and not cackle with glee as they toss living crustaceans into the pot.
Other laws ban devices that punish dogs for barking, mandate certain-sized cages for critters and ban guinea pigs, rabbits, and chicks from being put in display in zoos (understandably, these shy critters can be easily startled by inquisitive children).
"While the particular method of cooking can be considered legal by recognizing that it is commonly used, the suffering caused by detaining the animals while they wait to be cooked cannot be justified in that way," the judges wrote.
seems right, i never liked the idea of seeing something alive in a tank and then boom dead based on someone picking their 'death' on a plate. i mean we gotta eat (like they have to eat) but we can be humane about it. that is if you have'nt already taken the vow of plate life living! :) it can be done! i'm just not ready to go down that road yet.
I hope someday humans evolve to a point where they no longer eat animals. I hope plants don't have feelings but given how trees communicate with each other I fear plants have secret lives too. Currently the only animals I knowingly eat are seafood, but I'm even finding it hard to justify eating them. I really enjoy seafood, but never thought it was ok to torture lobsters in that way.
