The most poisonous animal in the world: "the sting frog"
Although frogs have pretty colors, it's better not to touch them because they are dangerous for humans!
Frogs are amphibians that have four legs and are found in very different territories whether climate (temperate, wet, dry ...) or the natural environment (on land, in water). While some common species in Europe are safe for humans, in some countries of the world frogs have very toxic characteristics. Let's discover the specimen that is the most vénimeux of all the specie.
These tiny batrachians, 2 to 7 cm, with bright colors are so colorful that they are also called "painted frogs".
Some Amazonian tribes call them "arrow frogs". Their skin contains an extremely violent poison that hunters gather to coat their arrows. This poison is 250 times more powerful than curare.
The sting frog lives in tropical forests in Central and South America, It is the most poisonous animal on earth because it has enough venom to kill 10 adult humans!
2 micrograms of its toxin can kill a human but also mammals,native Americans used the secretions of the frog to put at the end of their arrows.
There are more than 100 different species of the sting frog in the wild.
Batrachotoxin and medical research
The frog does not produce this toxin naturally. A recent study has shown that this poison comes from certain insects that amphibians ingest. If a dendrobate is placed in an artificial environment, its skin gradually loses this defensive weapon.
The toxins secreted by these frogs belong to the group of alkaloids, hence their great interest for researchers.
For example, one of these alkaloids is epibatidine, which is an analgesic 200 times more potent than morphine.
It was in the early 90's that we managed to synthesize the molecule. These amphibians are the subject of numerous studies in the context of medical research. We still have a lot to discover because most of their toxins have not yet been reproduced in the laboratory.
