Daily Birding 📷 37
Mallard Family
Today I’m more hungry than I can remember being in a while, and I’m in my second trimester so hungry is pretty much my constant state. For dinner I had two helpings of veggie burgers, a yogurt, and now I have a pizza in the oven.
I guess you could say I’m eating like a bird! Despite what the phrase originally implied, birds eat constantly and they eat a lot!
It varies a lot between species, hummingbirds can consume up to 100% of their body weight in nectar a day, whereas the Common Raven is down around 4%. Source. Now, you have to take into account that bird’s feathers are 5-10% of their body weight and their skeletons are even less. But it takes a lot of energy to fly, and that also needs strong muscles (not to mention organs and other body necessities) which adds significant weight.
Comparing humans, who eat three-five pounds of food a day, we eat somewhere around 2-3% of our body-weight daily, of course there are always outliers.
In any case, 'eating like a bird' should not be construed to mean eating very little.
:)
I hope you had a great day!

I hadn't thought about how much of the body weight birds eat. I know my bird feeder doesn't stay full for very long but I have been blaming squirrels. Considering how fast hummingbirds flap their wings I can see why they would consume so much.
It could still be partially squirrels, but I know my finch feeder drains like crazy and I don't have any squirrels at that feeder.
