More of the World Clydesdale Show
Last week, I posted photos from the 2015 World Clydesdale Show and you Steemians seemed to enjoy them enough that I thought I would find another batch for you. Here you go!
When we entered the arena in London, Ontario, we initially stood close to the ring. The horses trotted by so fast that everything was a blur but you really saw and felt everything. Close up, the ground shook with their massive footsteps, the harnesses jingled and even the horses' breathing was synchronized. At shows, they generally start out with smaller classes, maybe one horse pulling a carriage, and then the number of horses and size of wagon increase from there. Here we have two horses.
Now we have a roller from the popular old and antique agricultural category. It was only a couple of generations ago that tractors replaced horses and there were many old farmers amongst the horse lovers in the crowd.
In this category, they were raising money for charity and the horses had been sprayed with blue paint! All I could think of was how could anyone do this to a horse?!!
And here is that same carriage leaving. Carriages, people, and [cough] horses were decorated beautifully for this category.
This was from one of the fancier two hitch wagon classes. Again, we were close enough to hear and feel everything. Occasionally, we felt too close! Look at the feathers flying on their legs!
Here are the carriage finals.
After this, there was a break and we decided to return to the show stalls where we had been before the racket drove us out. I know these horses are gentle giants but they get rather excited over feed buckets! It had quieted down again and we could finish our tour.
Sorry, in narrow enough aisles, you either see the front or the back. Here is a beautiful black clydesdale, a less common color. Typically, we just squeezed by them.
Making friends again! I'm a dog lover too but my niece got to pat him first. When people ask what is so appealing about big horses, I always say they are like big dogs. Both have wonderful personalities.
More black beauties. As we wandered around, I kept thinking about insurance and liability. How was it that we visitors were allowed to be amongst these big horses? Even if they are known as gentle giants, how do you convince an insurance company of this? These are the kind of concerns that have ruined some horse shows, but not this one!
The Clydesdale owner community isn't that large so these shows have the feeling of a reunion for them. Everyone seems to know each other and they were happy to talk to us about their horses, and even introduce them.
Meeting a gang in the hood. We walked around the corner and they were blocking our way... probably 2,200 lbs (almost 1,000 kilograms) each. Just us and them, staring us down. They are both on cross ties but we decided not to pass them. What would you do?
Maybe we will head back to the ring. We got better seats this time to watch the bigger hitches. Overall, it was a great show.
Last photo, the eight-horse hitches. Be sure to see my photos from part 1, The World Clydesdale Show - for you horse fans and if you are in Wisconsin this fall, visit the 2018 World Clydesdale Show. There are approximately 5,000 Clydesdale horses in the world and you can see 600 in one place.
